It outranks an admiral of the navy, and a general of the army. Its equivalent is an Admiral of the Fleet of the navy, and a marshal of Royal Queensland Air Force.

It was established on May 16, 2015 by donating to the heads of state and military officers who have benefited from the Army. The numbers for Field Marshal of Royal Queensland Army were 6 and on September 26, 2020, King Albert V gave the title of Field Marshal of Royal Queensland Army to Dhrubajyoti Roy of Vishwamitra. He was the first foreigner to receive the Field Marshal of the Royal Queensland Army.

A Field Marshal's insignia consists of two crossed batons surrounded by Silver color in which the military baton It has a crown and leaves around it and is placed over a silver military baton below St Edward's Crown. Like Marshals of the RQAF and Admirals of the Fleet, Field Marshals traditionally remain officers for life, though on half-pay when not in an appointment.
