A hex map of Elysium, broken down by region.

The January 2020 Elysiumite senatorial election occurred on 18 January 2021, between Adam Johnston of the Progressive Party, Elliot Doe of the National Conservative Party, and various other parties.

Background

The upcoming election shall be the eleventh in Elysium’s history and shall feature Adam Johnston of the Progressive Party, Elliot Doe of the National Conservatives, Friedrich Wissman of the Rhinoceros Party, James Christian of the Liberal Party, and Zechariah O’Hair of the Yedinist Party.

The election is the first to occur since the Democratic Traditionalist, also known as the Unions Democrats, dissolved. The DTs were the opposition party last election and have been a major party in Elysium for over a year, yet the party began to implode shortly after it merged with the Libertarian Party and formed the Union Democrats. The new Union Democrats isolated their more conservative base which, led by Elliot Doe and JP officially broke off from the DTs/UDs and formed the National Conservatives, the new party soon gained a lot of grass roots support from conservative independents and former members of the DTs. By the time of the next election poll the National Conservatives already overtook the Union Democrats to become the second largest party and soon after the Union Democrats dissolved and their leader joined the National Conservatives. Kyle Smith soon after joined the party and was made leader, but he then dropped out of the race and Elliot Doe was once more made leader.

Between the time of the last two elections there was also major reform done to the electoral system of Elysium and instead of a MPP proportional system the nation switched to an all regional system. Each region following the reforms had one base seat, which must be held by a local of the region, and another proportional seat added per 15 people.

Meanwhile during the second term of the Johnston administration the nation had seen more corporation abroad, with Elysium entering multiple alliances and signing treaties with close nations. Elysium also saw a bounce in activity with a wide number of bills, amendments, and projects being done.

Progressives

Progressive primary

The Progressive Party Primary began on December 15th. Incumbent Prime Minister Adam Johnston decided to run for a third term but faced internal opposition from Senator Jamez of Ticronvidia. Soon after the primary began Adam Johnston received endorsements from Chancellor Robert Smith, Deputy Chancellor Kyle Smith, Speaker Sir Spooky Johnston, Senator and PM of Daeltheria Seán Dadga, and Chairman of the Confederation of Agricultural Unions Jayden Attlee. On the 19 of December Adam Johnston and Robert Smith released an official manifesto which was widely popular in the party. His competition Jamez received an endorsement from Senator Jack of Daeltheria.

On the 20 of December voting began and Adam Johnston won the primary with 88% of the vote to Jamez’s 12%. After the end of the primary Jamez endorsed Adam Johnston.

General election campaigning

The Progressive Party ran 15 candidates for Grand Senate, in all regions. The party mostly campaigned on protecting and expanding democracy, continued nationalization of industry, and promotion of regional development. The party was most aggressive in Ticronvidia running against National Conservative May who, following a large number of scandals, was kicked out her party, resigned from the Grand Senate , and renounced her citizenship. Meanwhile in Elyria the party, joined with the Unions, railed against Rhinoceros Leader Friedrich Wissman who was running for Senate in Elyria. In particular they hit him on his anti-worker voting record, deeply hurting his campaign as Elyria has the highest number of Unionised workers in Elyria.

On January 9 the Progressive Party and Liberal Party officially formed a coalition known as the Left Alliance and agreed not to negatively campaign against each other. In Elyria the Progressive Party helped James Christian in pursuit to win a seat.

National Conservatives

During this election season, following the Democratic Traditionalist forming a more moderate “Union Democrats”, a group of three Elyrian regional senators and one Grand Senator left the Union Democrats to form a party to their right, named the National Conservatives. They where led by a highly unknown local by the name of Elliot Doe, with well known Sir JP as his Deputy, and the party soon grew to take majority of the Union Democratic Caucus. Although due to its actions the Rhinoceros Party was briefly the official opposition. In the first pre-election poll which involved the National Conservatives they overtook the Union Democrats. Only a month after its creation the National Conservatives completely absorbed the Union Democrats and became the primarily opposition party. Elliot Doe was their nominee for Prime Minister.

General Election

During the general election the National Conservatives campaigned on economic reform and restoring activity.
