Earl of Grantham

Earl of Grantham is a title in the Peerage of Exeter. It was created on 7 September 2022 for the eldest son of Princess Monica with John, 1st Earl of Southavon. The title was based on character Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham in the series Downton Abbey, which also inspired its subsidiary title Viscount Downton.

History

On September 2022, King Henry VII's grandson and heir, the then Prince James (now Lord Grantham), due to family pressure to keep traditions, renounced to the titles of 'prince of Exeter' and 'Duke of Wolverton' and the style of Royal Highness and Grace. Leaving him with no titles, apart from his subsidiary title of Viscount Ashcot, which did not seem fit to his grandfather King Henry VII, so he decided to grant him the title of an Earl. It was reported that he was drawn to the denomination of 'Grantham' after watching the 2010 series Downton Abbey, where the main character is Robert Crawley interpreted by Hugh Bonneville, and holds the title of Earl of Grantham, and Viscount Downton; titles which he decided to take.

The current Earl of Grantham is also Duke of Minchington, Earl of Battishill, Viscount Ashcot and Baron Bealy.
