Canited (/kənaɪtɛd/), officially the Democratic Federation Republic of Canited (German: Die Demokratische Föderationsrepublik Canited), is a self-declared independent nation, or micronation, completely enclosed within the state of Saarland in Germany. It was founded on the 5 November 2021 and is a liberal, democratic and social constitutional state. Canited has three federal states called Merch, Ill and West-Saar, with the capital being in the federal state of Ill in the Province of Gennweiler. Furthermore, it has 29 citizens (census 2023). The only neighboring state is Germany, but Canited is located near the border to Luxembourg and France.

History

In November 2021, a group of students from a local school founded the People's Republic of Canited, the Saarland and the free nations. However, the country soon faced numerous challenges, including poor leadership under a cat named Muffin, which led to riots and the fall of the socialist state just three days later.

The Liberal Social Party played a major role in the coup and subsequently formed an interim government, which introduced a new constitution and democratic system. On December 1, 2021, the country held its first election, which was deemed unprofessional but still democratic. The Liberal Social Party won with 49% of the vote, followed closely by the Socialist Unity Party (now Left Liberal Party) with 41%, the Republican Party with 5% and the Left Democratic Alliance with 5%. The Liberal Social Party formed a coalition with the Republican Party, known as the "Ukraine Coalition." During this time, Canited also formed an alliance with the Republic of Kelko called the "KFC Alliance," which later welcomed Espoona and Slavtria as members on February 1, 2022. However, the integration of Kelko into Canited's affairs led to the formation of the "Canitalese Protectorate of Kelko," which made Kelko a protectorate under Canited's rule. This arrangement lasted only two months before Kelko regained its independence due to international dramas between Kelko and Canited's allies, Espoona and Slavtria and Canited itself. The KFC Alliance eventually came to an end on October 20, 2022. In April 2022, Canited faced its first international conflict with Redschanks United, which became known as the Redshanks Incident. During this time, Canited was under attack from Redshanks allies and Redshanks. Redshanks declared war on 25 November 2022, which was ignored by the canitalese government. After talks of deescalation, the "war" came to an end. Since then, Canited's foreign policy has become more isolationist and pacifistic.

Politics and government

The democratic Federation Republic of Canited is a social, democratic republic, build on the values of European democracy, human rights and equality. It has a two parliamentary system, the lower house called national congress (German: Nationalkongress) and the upper house called council of ministers (Ministerrat).

Nationalkongress

The national congress (German: Nationalkongress) is the Lower house of Canited, deciding and discussing laws. It was established on the 19th of November 2021 and operates to this day. Representatives for this parliament are being elected indirect by the people. Those must be a member of a political party to have the chance of being elected. The national congress is led by the speaker of the house and its vice representatives.

Ministerrat

The council of ministers (German: Ministerrat) is the upper house of Canited. It passes bills and if needed discusses them. The ministers can be elected if they aren't in a party, however, typically they are also members of the national congress, because the exact ministers are elected by national congress. The exact percentage to which party has the rights to ministers is elected by the people.

Head of state

Canited has a unique system with no clear head of state. The Ministerrat is considered the highest executive power in the political system, therefore making all ministers head of state.

Head of government and coalitions

The Head of Government (or officially, Speaker of Government, German: Regierungssprecher) has the task of signing or rejecting bills, however, with a 2/3 majority in both houses, he can be forced to sign the bills. Furthermore, he/she represents Canited to the world and its own people. If the "Speaker of Government" can't continue his duties, he is replaced by the Vice Head of Government.

If a party can't win a majority in parliament, they are forced by law to form a coalition to achieve the majority. This happened after the first democratically elected parliament in December 2021 because the Liberal Social Party couldn't win the majority by 1% and so had to form a coalition with the Republican Party, winning just nearly a majority with half of the seats.

History of the government and past elections

Before the civil war, Canited was a socialistic dictatorship with a cat as head of state holding absolute power. After a three-day-long civil war, the dictatorship fell, and a democratic system was established. The interim government was led by the Liberal Social Party until the elections when they received 49% of the votes. To this day, some think the elections were not held correctly; however, the LSP denies this, and so does the national court.

Foreign policies

Canited's foreign policy is more or less isolationist and pacifistic, not only for moral reasons but also because of the law of Canited, which requires it after it was ratified in the Neutrality Act of 2022. Article I-10 of the constitution states:

(1) The Democratic Federal Republic of Canited may not interfere in the politics of other states.

(2) One may only form an opinion about the state and sanction it if necessary.

Canited signed the Chyše Charter on February 27th because it did not violate this article. The nation itself is not a big diplomatic powerhouse, mostly invisible to larger micronations because of its very nationalistic approach.

Canited traded Canru banknotes with foreign currencies of Edristan and Obscurium. It also traded with private individuals.

Geography and climate

Canited belongs entirely to the temperate climate zone of Central Europe in the area of the west wind zone and is located in the transitional area between the maritime climate in Western Europe and the continental climate in Eastern Europe. The climate in Canited is influenced, among other things, by the Gulf Stream, which makes the average temperature level unusually high for the latitude.

The landscape of Canited is dominated by forests and wide grass fields mostly used by farmers. The main population center is located along the rivers Merch and Ill, flowing through the villages of Merchweiler and Illingen. This is also where most of the territorial claims lie. Other population centers, like the city of Saarlouis, are located further west, along the banks of the river Saar. The average elevation is around 255 meters above sea level.

Vegetation

The forests in Canited's territory are mixed forests, with the most common tree being the oak tree, closely followed by the pine tree.

Economy

Covering state expenses

Canited finances itself mostly through donations from its citizens. Already in debt of 110.92€, the country aims to maintain a "black zero" policy, meaning no further debt will be incurred.

Currency

The official currency of Canited is the Canru. Established on November 16, 2021, it faced several complications, including delays in design, and production only began on January 16, 2023. The exchange rate is 1€ to 5 Canru, and banknotes with denominations of 5, 25, 50, 100, 250, and 500 are issued.

State-owned companies

Founded on January 2, 2023, it is responsible for providing the government with statistics such as the number of citizens and a list of democratic nations. It is subject to the Ministry for Domain Affairs.

Gesellschaft für Discord

Founded on November 8, 2022, its responsibilities include building a Discord server and, once it is completed, moderating and advertising it.

Föderationsbank

This is the oldest company in Canited, founded on November 16, 2021. It is responsible for providing Canited with banknotes and is under the direct control of the Ministry for Finances, Economy, Health, and Progress. It has a yearly budget of 40€ to achieve its goals and to order banknotes and other things related to the currency.

Canitalesische Gesellschaft für Post und Email (GPE)

In charge of mail and trade for Canited with other micronations, it is also responsible for cybersecurity for social media accounts and emails. Founded on January 1, 2022, it is also responsible for designing and providing postage stamps.

Culture

The culture overlaps deeply with German and especially Saarland culture. The mining and steel industry has left traces, not just in Saarland, but also in Canited. The major part of the population, especially in the federal states of Merch and Ill, lives in old towns constructed for miners or workers of the big steel mills (Neunkirchen and Dillingen). The industrialization brought many new jobs in the Saarland, not just because of its huge coal reserves, but also its good location in the middle of Europe at the bend of the Saar. Canited's culture is, therefore, heavily influenced by this.

Food

This local food is called "Mehlknepp" and is from the Saarland kitchen.

The regional cuisine is based on the Saarland cuisine with classic dishes like "Gefüllte", "Mehlknepp" and "Dibbelabbes" but also heavily influenced by the French cuisine.

Media

Canited has two media companies: the Gesellschaft für Discord, responsible for the nation's Discord server, and the Forum News, issued by the state-owned Canitalesiche Gesellschaft für Post und Email. The Forum News is the only newspaper in Canited and is said to be too government-friendly. The social media accounts are administered by the national government.

The flag of Canited has remained consistent since the fall of the socialist state. Blue at the top stands for the sky and the endless possibilities in Canited. Green stands for the vegetation of Canited and hope during difficult times. Black stands for the civil war and equality, and the yellow bird represents victory in the civil war, peace, democracy, and the progress of Canited.

Coat of Arms

The coat of arms was recently introduced. The laurel wreath represents victory and honor for the country, and the bird in the middle symbolizes democracy, peace, and the people of Canited.

Name

Canited (/kənaɪtɛd/) is a combination of English words. The words "can" (/kən/) and "I" (/aɪ/) and the last syllables of the word "United" (/jʊˈnaɪtəd/) form the question "Can I (be) united?", referring to the division in societies and how it can be resolved.
