The 2023 Taipei IPSM Summit was a micronational summit that took place on the 10 December 2023 in Taipei, Taiwan. The summit was organised by Pio Lowe of the New Rubix Republic and Justin Tsai of the Principality of Hershwell. It is significant due to being the first micronational summit of international nature to take place in Asia, previous summits being restricted to local attendees.

Overview

Background

The organisers of the summit first met in the context of a personal visit by Lowe to Taipei, Taiwan. An informal meeting was organised and took place at the historic Cafe Astoria on 30th of October where they held a discussion on micronationalism and the possibility of a micronational summit for Asian and Oceanic micronations over tea among other topics. Afterwards, Tsai was awarded the Rubixian Order of Merit in recognition of his significant contributions to micronationalism in his facility as President of the Taiwanese Micronational Association (TMA).

The Summit

Jointly hosted by New Rubix and Hershwell, the 1st Inter-Pacific Summit of Micronations was announced to take place in Taipei for the 10th of December. Organised over Facebook, it attracted significant interest within the Chinese language sector with the majority of attendees coming from it. Emulating a popular precedent in western micronational summits, an attendance medal was commissioned by Lowe which was then awarded in a ceremony to all summit delegates. Formal relations were signed and established between the host nations with statements of friendship affirmed with the other attending states. Furthermore, discussion regarding the potential for a postal union was made to much support to the idea and the intention for future IPSM summits to be held.

Aftermath

Following the success of the 1st IPSM summit, the 2023 Hong Kong IPSM Meetup was organised over Facebook and scheduled to take place the following month. Furthermore, micronations throughout the Chinese language sector congratulated the organisers with interest in attending a future summit expressed due to its success. The summit can also be credited for bringing attention in Western micronational spheres to the existance of Taiwanese micronations and a well established regional organsation similar in scope to the International Organisation of La MicroFrancophonie, the TMA, to represent Chinese language micronations in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
