The Defence Council of Parnesia (DC), sometimes referred to as the Defence Staff, is the supreme governing body of the Armed Forces of Parnesia. It was established by Royal Order 1 in June 2024, issued by King Luke I. The council is vested with the duties and powers of administration and command over the armed forces. It is a government agency as well as part of the armed forces.
The defence council consists of the chiefs of staff committee, its principal committee, as well as the defence board, army board, navy board, and air force board. The defence council and defence board are both attended and chaired by the monarch of Parnesia as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, but the Chief of the Defence Staff (the professional head of the armed forces) often fills in for the monarch in their absence.
History
The defence council was created on 15 June 2024, with the creation of the armed forces. The council was created by King Luke I with the issuance of Royal Order 1. It was created as the highest body of the armed forces as well as the current highest government body pertaining to matters specifically of the armed forces.
Functions
The defence council has overall command responsibility for the armed forces. It governs the military alongside the monarch, who is the commander-in-chief, as well as advising the monarch on matters of defence. The council can also govern the military on the monarch's behalf in their absence or at their request. The council has the power to issue regulations for the governing of the armed forces as well as informing the monarch on all military matters.
It is common for the incumbent defence council to also sit as members of the privy council. As the closest military advisors to the monarch, the council has a significant influence over military policy. Members of the defence council also are usually authorised to have direct access to the monarch in case of national emergency or for the need of imminent military action.
