In addition to being the heir apparent, the crown prince is a key advisor to the monarch (often sitting as an ex officio member of the privy council) and often conducts duties to support the monarch in their role.
The crown prince is always a member of the Parnesian royal family, customarily being the monarch's eldest son in accordance with Royal Decree 1. It is the second oldest office in Parnesia, after the monarchy, being formed on 14 June 2024.
The crown prince also usually acts as regent when a regency is needed.
The office is currently vacant and so belongs to the Crown.
History
The office of crown prince was established Royal Decree 1 - the Law on Royal Succession. The decree outlines and establishes the process for succession to the throne of Parnesia, and thus creates the post of crown prince. The decree was ratified on 14 June 2024, therefore creating the post on that day.
The crown principality evolves over time with each new crown prince and the duties devolved upon them by the monarch.
Functions
The Law on Royal Succession outlines how the functions of the crown prince are whatever duties are devolved upon the incumbent by the monarch. However, these duties usually include:
- Representing the state abroad,
- Receiving some foreign officials,
- Advising the monarch,
- Chairing the privy council in the monarch's absence,
- Ceremonial duties with the armed forces,
- Acting as regent in the monarch's absence,
The exact functions of the crown principality vary with each monarch and crown prince in addition to what the nation needs.
Appointment
According to the Law on Royal Succession, the crown prince is appointed by the monarch and serve at their pleasure or until he succeeds the throne. The law also outlines that the crown prince has to be a legitimate descendent of the reigning monarch, has to be a practicing Christian and not in a marriage that was refused royal assent.
Upon assuming the title, the incoming crown prince is also required to swear an oath of allegiance to the monarch. Additional titles may be granted to the crown prince upon appointment as crown prince.
When no crown prince has been appointed, the title reverts to the crown until someone in the royal family is authorised to bear and appointed to the title and duties of the office.
Customarily the crown prince is the eldest son of the monarch. In the absence of male children of the monarch, the eldest daughter can become de facto crown princess and heir presumptive.
Styles
The crown prince, like other royal princes, is entitled to the style of "His Royal Highness" (HRH). However, if chairing the privy council in the monarch's absence then they may be known as "His Royal Highness, The Right Honourable Crown Prince" for the duration they are chairing. This style changes to "Your Majesty" upon the crown prince assuming the throne as monarch.
