The Armed Forces of Parnesia, officially known as His Majesty's Armed Forces, are the military forces of the Kingdom of Parnesia and are responsible for the state's defence. They also promote Parnesian interests abroad, and help providing humanitarian aid in addition to international peacekeeping.
King Luke I, the Sovereign of Parnesia, is the commander-in-chief and head of the armed forces with all officers and personnel swearing allegiance to him. The monarch governs the armed forces alongside the Defence Council, the primary governing organ of the armed forces. The Chief of the Defence Staff serves as the professional head of the armed forces and is the monarch's chief advisor on military affairs.
History
The armed forces were created by King Luke I on 15 June 2024 when he issued Royal Order 1. The royal order established the three branches of the armed forces, outlined their rank structures and roles, as well as defining the general command organisation of the armed forces and the general structure of each branch. It also defined the monarchy's relation to the armed forces by formally vesting the role of commander-in-chief in the monarchy.
Branches
The armed forces are organised into three branches: the Parnesian Army, the Royal Parnesian Navy and the Royal Parnesian Air Force.
Army
The Parnesian Army is the land warfare force of the armed forces. A primarily infantry force, the army executes ground military operations, defends the territorial integrity of Parnesia and can help maintain the land borders of the state. The army also can operate cavalry, artillery, army aviation, military police and special forces - in addition to others.
The army is administered by the Chief of the General Staff (CGS) and the Army Board.
The Royal Parnesian Navy is the naval warfare force of the armed forces. It conducts naval operations, ensures naval supremacy and defends Parnesian waters. Additionally the navy defends trade routes, and ensures the stability of international trade at sea.
Naval administration is conducted by the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) and the Navy Board.
Air Force
The Royal Parnesian Air Force (RPAF) is the air and space force of the armed forces. The air force specialises in aerial warfare and aims to maintain aerial superiority in addition to defending Parnesian airspace and providing aerial support to the army and navy.
The administration of the air force is conducted by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) and the Air Force Board.
Command Structure
All members of the armed forces, commissioned and non-commissioned, swear allegiance to the monarch as commander-in-chief upon joining the armed forces. As commander-in-chief, the monarch is head of the armed forces so holds ultimate regulatory and command power over the armed forces. However, this power is often exercised on the advice of the Defence Council or by them in the name of the monarch.
The defence council consists of the monarch, the Chief and Vice Chief of the Defence Staff, and all branch chiefs of staff. However, the defence council often meets in its smaller committees - the defence board, chiefs of staff committee and the branch boards.
The chief of the defence staff (CDS) is the senior-most official of the armed forces after the commander-in-chief, and is an appointment that can be held by an Admiral, Air Chief Marshal or General. The CDS is appointed by the monarch and serves at their pleasure. In addition to the general oversight of the armed forces, the CDS is the chief advisor to the monarch on military affairs.
Recruitment
Only those with Parnesian citizenship are eligible to serve in the armed forces, however exceptions can be made for individual cases by warrant of the monarch. The joining age is not fixed by law but, by convention, no-body under the age of 16 is accepted into any branch of the armed forces. The maximum recruitment age is also fixed by convention and is dependent on branch, role and whether the applicant is trying out for the regulars or reserves. Each branch has authorisation to set their own joining requirements with the approval of the branch board.
Conscription is not in use in Parnesia, but it is expected that all citizens will at some stage serve in the armed forces.
