Daniel Cendrick was caught fleeing from Atafu to Fiji on April 10, 2021. He was detained. On April 11, he was taken to Atafu State Hospital for a health check before the court. Diagnosed with COVID-19 while performing routine tests, quarantined. On April 14, his condition worsened and he was taken to intensive care. On April 16, his condition reached a critical level and the oxygen tube was connected. 5 days later, on April 22, he succumbed to the disease and died. Cendrick became the first politician in Tavil Republic to die of COVID-19. Despite the accusations against him, he was buried in the National State Cemetery, where it was decided to bury the statesmen who would die. This move of the government received great support and respect from the public, especially the Tavil Communist Party. However, some people claims that Cendrick was tortured by the police, the military and the government for 11 days during his detention and died due to his wounds.[citation needed]
