The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) (Welsh: Pennaeth y Staff Amddiffyn), commonly known as the Chief of Defence (Welsh: Pennaeth Amddiffyn), is the professional head of the Armed Forces of Uzkukia and the most senior military advisor to the government. The Chief of Defence is the highest-ranking officer in the armed forces and has overall command responsibility for the armed forces.

Command of the armed forces is exercised by the monarch, as commander-in-chief, alongside the Defence High Command in which the chief of defence is a member. The CDS is also a member of the Chiefs of Staff Committee and Defence Board, both of which being sub-committees of the Defence High Command.

The CDS is responsible to the monarch who is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, and so reports to them to provide them advice on defence policy and on oversight of the armed forces.

The office is currently vacant.

History

The posting of chief of the defence staff dates back to the creation of the armed forces. The office was created by the same royal order issued by King Colin I that founded the armed forces. The order was issued on 1 August 2024, instituting the office the same day.

The royal order outlined the general responsibilities of the office, in addition its appointment. It also defines the CDS as a member of the Defence High Command, in addition to being the chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee as well as being a member of the Defence Board. The order also constitutes the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff as the CDS's deputy.

Responsibilities

The Chief of Defence's responsibilities includes:

  • Leading defence,
  • Setting defence strategy and goals,
  • Conduct of current operations,
  • Leading relations with foreign armed forces,
  • Advising the government on defence policy,
  • Chairing the Chiefs of Staff Committee,

Appointment

The CDS, as a senior military appointment, is appointed by the monarch. They serve at the monarch's pleasure. It is customary for the appointee to have served in a posting on the Defence High Command (usually a branch chief of staff or as vice chief of the defence staff) before being promoted to Chief of the Defence Staff.

It is also customary for the CDS to be elevated to their branch's highest rank upon either appointment to the office or upon their retirement from the armed forces. Additionally, the CDS is usually created an ex officio member of the privy council.

Deputy

The chief of defence is supported by a deputy, the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff (commonly known as the vice chief of defence). The vice chief of defence is usually of an equivalent rank to the CDS but from a different branch, or is the rank immediately below the CDS but of the same branch.

The CDS is also supported by the Chiefs of Staff Committee, a sub-committee of the Defence High Command. The members of the Chiefs of Staff Committee, who are the branch chiefs of staff as well as the CDS and VCDS, are able to provide branch-specific reports and advice to the CDS to ensure the effective running of each branch and the armed forces as a whole.
