The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) is the professional head of the Armed Forces of Frondesia, chair of the Supreme Command Council and is also the senior-most uniformed officer in the armed forces. The officeholder is appointed by the President, who is commander-in-chief of the armed forces, and as a result the CDS also reports to the Security Council of Frondesia. As well as a military commander, they also advise the President and Government of Frondesia on matters of defence, and they work closely with the Minister of Defence.

The office is currently vacant.

History

The Chief of the Defence Staff is the oldest non-governmental defence office in Frondesia. It was established on 26 August 2023 upon the foundation of the armed forces.

Responsibilities

The Chief of Defence Staff's remit includes:

  • Leading defence,
  • Setting defence strategy,
  • Conduct of current operations,
  • Leading relations with foreign armed forces,

Appointment

The President of Frondesia appoints the Chief of the Defence Staff, in their constitutional position as "Supreme Commander-in-Chief". Usually, when the office becomes vacant, the president will promote one of the branch chiefs of staff or the vice chief of the defence staff but they can technically appoint whichever armed forces officer they wish to the position.

They usually appoint the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff alongside the Chief of the Defence Staff.

The chief of the defence staff is usually always a full General or Admiral, but if they aren't upon appointment they are usually promoted upon taking office.

Supporting Positions

The CDS is primarily supported by the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff who is usually at the same rank or one rank below the incumbent CDS. The Chief of the Defence staff works closely with government ministers, primarily the president and defence minister due to their powers over the armed forces and defence policy. However, they can and do advise the prime minister when necessary.
