Brungarþr is a Hjalsk territory located in the Midfold district of the Jarldom of Hjalvik. The territory was established by Jarl Juvan I and Jarl Keaghan I on 24 February 2021.

Etymology

The Hjalsk words "brun" (meaning "burn"), and "garþr" (meaning "enclosure") describe the nature of the territory; it sits amongst a small forest, beside a gently flowing burn.

History

Establishment

Brungarþr was originally a lookout base where the Hjalsk Armed Forces would hide out, located amongst a small forest. The land was never considered part of Hjalvik originally.

On 24 February 2021, Jarl Juvan I and Jarl Keaghan I ventured to the territory to revisit for the first time in a while. During the visit, Jarl Juvan declared the lands now under Hjalsk sovereignty, and they would now become a territory. Jarl Keaghan declared these lands to be henceforth known as Brungarþr, and he would be appointed as governor of the territory.

Over time, defensive walls constructed using sticks and other items at hand, were constructed around the perimeter of Brungarþr. The base was divided up into several small chambers. A roof was assembled over the main chamber of the base, thatched using grass and turf. Other chambers consisted of a storage room and an armoury.

Fall of Brungarþr

Brungarþr soon became one of Hjalvik’s most successful territories when it came to economic factors, with defensive walls constructed by the HEME having constructed large wooden fences around the perimeter of the territory, and a plans for the construction of a water mill down by the stream.

On 16 June 2021, Hjalsk military troops were off for their usual patrol of the base, but as they approached the territory through the woods, they heard noises from inside the base. The troops decided not to intervene, and instead carried on through the woods. They settled in a position that allowed them to see across the river and through the trees into the territory. The troops saw two British citizens roaming around the base, seemingly taking photographs and inspecting the fort. The Hjalsk troops on duty decided to carry on further through the woods out of sight to wait for the trespassers to leave.

As the troops carried on through the woods, they heard the two Britons close behind. They appeared to have left the territory. The Hjalsk troops took up position in the woods for a short time, waiting for dusk, when they would return to the territory to check for any possible damage. In the meantime, the troops contacted several Hjalsk citizens, governors or other military personnel, informing them of the current situation.

As dusk fell, the Hjalsk troops ventured back into the territory to inspect the situation. Not a great amount had changed. The thatched roof that once sheltered the main chamber. The Hjalsk troops decided to disassemble the defensive walls, take any valuables that may have been stored in the territory’s armoury or storage rooms, and abandon the base for good. Brungarþr is still officially claimed under Hjalsk sovereignty, but the territory is no longer visited without a reason, and the military base is now disused.

Current state

After the fall of Brungarþr, the territory was suppositionally abandoned. The Hjalsk forces no longer visit the territory for guard duty. However during the summer months, the dense overgrowth of the territory provides a secure location for a storage facility for military weaponry and tools.

Geography

Brungarþr sits amongst a young forest of trees, no more than a couple decades of age. The land is relatively flat, and easy to fortify. On the north side of the territory, a narrow burn flows below, and on all other sides, natural walls of trees make for a convenient border perimeter.

Military establishments

The Hjalsk Army operated an army base at Brungarþr, known as "Fort Brungarþr". The base was heavily fortified, with the shallow burn acting as a strategic natural moat. Each other face of the base was fortified with large walls of trees, which in case of invasion, would be considerably difficult for an attacker to get through without being countered by soldiers on duty.

The base now sits in ruin, a stark reminder of Brungarþr‘s important past.
