The Vice President of Spajistan is the deputy head of state and government of the Republic of Spajistan. The vice president is a senior officer in the executive branch of government, as well as the highest ranking legislative officer - as the vice president is ex officio President of the Senate. The office is the second highest in the nation. The vice presidency was established on 26 March 2023 alongside the presidency.
Election
The vice president is elected alongside the president on a joint ticket by the electoral college. However, if a president is elected without a vice president or the vice presidency becomes vacant throughout the president's term they can choose to keep the vice presidency vacant or appoint a vice president with senate advice and consent.
Duties
The vice president has no officially granted powers, and their duties in the executive branch are dependent on what powers the president devolves to them. The vice president also serves as the senior-most presidential advisor and plays a key role in influencing government decisions. The vice presidency also oversees the Office of the Vice President - a senior cabinet level officer aiding the VP in their duties.
The vice president is ex officio the president of the senate. They are not granted voting powers in the senate except in tie-breaking situations, but can preside over sittings of the senate and maintain order. In sittings of the senate where the vice president is not present, the President Pro Tempore of the Senate presides for them.
Succession
If a president is impeached, resigns or dies in office then the vice president steps down as vice president and is sworn in as president. However, this does not happen if the VP is impeached or resigns alongside the president and instead the Speaker of the House of Assembly becomes president.
