The President of Spajistan is the executive head of state and head of government of the Republic of Spajistan. The president is also commander-in-chief of the armed forces. The president is the head and highest officer of the executive branch of Government. The presidency also chairs and advised by the Cabinet, though the president holds the final say in all government decisions.
The current president is Olivia Garcia who took office on 26 March 2023.
Duties and Powers
The President is the officer in the republic formally vested with the status of chief executive. The office signs off on all proposed legislation, and can veto any legislation. The President also appoints cabinet ministers and other executive officers.
The defined duties of the President are:
- Signing or Vetoing Legislation
- Sign Treaties
- Receive and Credit Ambassadors
- Declaring War and Making Peace
- Declaring States of Siege and Emergency
- Calling and Dissolving Parliament
- Appoint and Dismiss Executive Officers
- Appoint Supreme Court Justices when Vacancies Occur
Impeachment
The president can be impeached from office if a minimum of a 2/3 majority of the House of Assembly votes to impeach the president. If this happens, the Senate then tries the president. Usually in presidential impeachments, the Chief Justice presides over the senate for the duration of the trial.
Acting Presidency
In the event of a president becoming unable to carry out the duties of the office temporarily, with the consent of parliament, the president can give the vice president the powers of the presidency and allow the vice president to become the acting president.
Succession
In the event of resignation, impeachment or death in office of a president, the vice president is first in line to office and is sworn into office unless they have become incapable of taking the presidency. In which case the House Speaker is sworn into office.
