Abilene was originally part of the New South Wales local government area of Wingecarribee until it declared independence on the 1st February 2021 and became its own self-governing micro-nation. Abilene was founded by current and first President Sir Sam Dawson who had grown increasingly frustrated with the actions of both the Commonwealth and New South Wales Governments and after reading about micro-nationalism decided to establish Abilene. Abilene is currently governed by an interim executive council and cabinet which consists of the President and Prime Minister Sir Edward Huang. The executive council was one of the President’s first appointments after independence was declared and was put in place to promote Abilene within the community of micro-nations, build a sustainable population and foreign policy and work towards the calling of the country's first elections. Abilene’s main population centre is the capital and only city of Ellsworth (2 in 2021). There is also a larger population of Abilenean nationals living in the Commonwealth of Australia (4 2021).
