Tyranny to Triumph (Filipino: Mula sa Paniniil tungo sa Tagumpay or Tagumpay Laban sa Kalupitan) is a short story written by Jerold I, the current king of Arlandica, originally published by The Hopeful Morning on October 17, 2024. Exploring themes of power, betrayal, and redemption, the story follows the journey of Emperor Maro III, a monarch of the Empire of Melasco, who is betrayed by his generals, overthrown, and later leads a revolt to reclaim his throne, all set in the fictional Empire of Melasco. It is written in both English and Filipino languages.

The short story is required reading for all government personnel in the Kingdom of Arlandica and is considered culturally significant in contributing to the country's literature.

Background

Tyranny to Triumph is inspired by the real-life events of the Arland Crisis that occurred in March 2021, drawing parallels between the crisis and the story. According to King Jerold I, this work reflects his insights and personal experiences during that time. Jerold I describes himself as the emperor in the story. He wrote the short story alone and published it in Arlandica's state-owned newspaper, The Hopeful Morning, where he also serves as the Editor-in-Chief.

Plot

Emperor Maro III becomes ruler after his father, Maro II, suddenly dies. At just 28 years old, Maro feels overwhelmed and inexperienced, relying on his advisors, especially General Christopher. Christopher tricks him into focusing on military power instead of helping the struggling lower class. While lavish parties are held in the Imperial City, Maro grows more isolated. Eventually, Christopher poisons him and locks him up. However, Maro escapes and hides with the farmers in the town of Golwar, where he sees how hard life is for his people.

Determined to take back his throne and fight for the poor, Maro gathers the farmers and starts a rebellion against Christopher's rule. As word of his survival spreads, more people join the fight, bringing hope to the empire. With the support of Prime Minister Francisco, Maro and his allies capture military bases and march on the Imperial City. In the final battle, Maro confronts Christopher, leading to the general's defeat. With the support of the people, Maro regains power, promising to create a better future for all citizens of Melasco, free from oppression and tyranny.

Legacy

The short story was highly promoted by the Ministry of Information of the Arlandican government. It highlights the flaws of a constitutional monarchy while also criticizing republican dictatorships. However, it argues that monarchy can provide stability, governance, and order within a country. King Jerold I stated:

My short story is a reflection of the complexities of governance and the importance of understanding the balance between power and responsibility. It serves as a reminder that while no system is perfect, the monarchy can offer a framework for unity and progress when guided by compassion and a commitment to the people's well-being.

Influence on Arlandican nationalism

The work is instrumental in creating a unified Arlandican national identity and consciousness. By showing the struggles and successes of a monarch who represents the values of strength, bravery, and commitment to the people, the story builds pride among citizens.

It motivates Arlandicans to embrace their identity and get involved in shaping their country’s future. In the end, the story inspires people to take action, emphasizing that everyone has a role in creating a fair and successful society.
