The Sovereign Military Order of Saint George, (Latin: Supremus Militaris Ordo Sancti Georgii), commonly known as Saint George or the acronym (SMOSG) is a ceremonial order, traditionally of military, chivalric and noble nature. Though it possesses no territory, the order is a sovereign entity with a structured government and maintains diplomatic relations.
The order is led by an elected Prince and Grand Master. Its motto is Alii Ante Sui (Others Before Self). The order is named after Saint George and is reflected in titles and symbolism notably within the flag and flag variant. Saint George largely focused on promoting humanitarianism, assisting with peace and meditation within micronations, and ceremonial duties. The structure and sovereignty of Saint George is comparable to the Order of Malta.
History
Foundation
Saint George dates back to 2020, being the continuation of the Communal Grand Council established on August 20, 2020. The Communal Grand Council was plagued early on by infighting caused by political and general differences within the membership. It then transitioned to a Sovereign Military Order under a different name than the current one, which was known as Blakeana. The early stages were viewed as unstable with occasional members leaving and rejoining and at times extreme infighting. During this time Saint George maintained an isolationist foreign policy and was largely focused on ceremonial and chivalric duties.
This led the government of Saint George to reform the systems and structure of government which remains the current system of government. During this the government reformed, changing symbolism and the name being named after Saint George. Since reformation Saint George has adopted an active foreign policy and established itself as a neutral nation.
Government
Saint George is a parliamentary Elective Monarchy with most powers being invested within the Sovereign Council, the executive branch of government.
- Executive: The Prince and Grand Master is responsible for enacting law, has assent power over legislation, and two appointed seats within the Chapter General. Acting with the Sovereign Council, the Prince and Grand Master can propose legislation. Ministerial duties are given to members of the Sovereign Council who oversee ministries, members are appointed by the Prince and Grand Master but traditionally this has been on the advice of the Grand Chancellor.
- Legislative: The unicameral Chapter General votes on laws proposed, approves budgets, and recommending a Grand Chancellor.
- Judiciary: The Court of Lower Magistrates is an elected group of two Lower Magistrates that oversees cases at the request of the Prince and Grand Master. The role of interpreting if laws are inconsistent with the Constitutional Charter is given to the Prince and Grand Master that can refuse to assent laws for this reason.
The Prince and Grand Master is considered the Head of State and has a high degree of power which has historically been self-constrained through precedents. They are not eligible for consecutive terms and serve for one year. The Grand Chancellor is considered the Head of Government and selects members of the Sovereign Council. They are eligible for consecutive terms and have no restrictions on term length.
Politics within Saint George are considered to be status quo with members having next to no differences on major issues. Overall voters tend to lean conservative, and politicians tend to be more conservative with occasionally support economic and social liberalism.
