Barvinia, officially the Republic of Barvinia (Portuguese: República da Barvínia; Portuguese pronunciation: [bár'ví'neea]), is a small self-declared country, commonly known as a micronation, located in South America, bordering Brazil. The territory of Barvinia is enclaved within the Brazilian state of São Paulo, in the city of Taubaté. The capital is Naquine. The country is divided into four states and seven municipalities. Barvinian Portuguese and Catalan are the national and official languages.
Modern-day Barvinia was inhabited by numerous tribal nations until settlement by the Portuguese Empire in the 16th century establishing its new Colony of Brazil, which gained its independence in 1822 with the creation of the Empire of Brazil, later becoming a presidential republic after a military coup d'état in 1889.
