In the Sovereign State of Åland, politics functions within a framework of a unitary parliamentary republic with an executive president. The three distinct branches share powers: the parliament which forms the legislative branch, a unicameral legislative body; the executive branch, which is headed by the president, who serves as the country's head of state and government; and the judicial branch, composed of the Supreme Court and lower courts, and which exercises judicial power.
National government
The national government is described in the constitution of the State of Åland.[1] The government is broken up into three different branches, the executive branch, legislative branch and judicial branch. The executive branch is led by the president. The legislative branch is led by the parliament. And the judicial branch is led by the supreme court.
- The Parliament leads the legislative branch. The Parliament can draft bills and veto the president's foreign policy decisions. Members in Parliament are voted on every year.
- The President leads the executive branch. The President can sign executive orders which are laws, bills and policies. Executive orders can only relate to internal policy and not foreign policy.
- The Supreme Court leads the judicial branch. The Supreme Court is led by the Chief of Justice who is the President (If the President wants to be). The Supreme Court checks bills and executive orders to make sure it does not break the constitution.
Axel Himberg is currently the president and chief of justice and has a seat in parliament.[2][3] Wilmer Himberg also has a seat in the parliament.
Elections
Any citizen of the the State of Åland is allowed to vote in elections. Leglislative elections take place on 1 December every year.[1] Presidential elections take place on 1 June every year and primaries take place on 1 May every year. [1]
Political parties
Currently there is only one pary in the State of Åland, the Ålandic Independance Party (ÅSP).[4] During the 2024 State of Åland legislative election there was the Temporary Opposition Party (TOP).[4] The TOP was a temporary opposition party to the ÅSP.[4] If the TOP won a seat, it would have gone to a future opposition party.[4]
