The Governorate of Northan is a Governorate of the Kingdom of Fontasia. Its capital is the city of Northan. It is known for its lakeside ports and various wildlands. The Governorate's current population is 3.
Brief History
The area around Northan was the first location to be colonized by Europeans in Assemblia Proper, along Lake Northan (Lake Chauncy).
Northan was among the last regions conquered during the expansion of the First Assemblic Empire across Assemblia, and was originally named Northland, which after many years evolved into Northan. The western part of Northan was the location of the Climb of Mount Carzvon, which was the first time an Assemblian flag was planted elsewhere in Assemblia, atop a small sand hill known as Mount Carzvon. During the First Assemblic Civil War, the same region around Mount Carzvon, apart of the Province of Gaermacia in Assemblian times was the setting for several key battles, most notably the Battles of Gaers.
After those events however, Northan exited the spotlight in Assemblian affairs, only returning when Assemblians refocused on the area in mid-2019. By 2020, Northan became an important location for exploration. In Summer 2021, the Udayaprakash-1 rocket was launched from Northan, and over several months a few more rocket tests took place in the territory.
Northan became a Governorate of the Kingdom of Fontasia on 1 March 2022, and became a key area for Fontasian exploration. However, in late 2022 activity by Fontasians in the region drastically decreased due to lack of interest, and to further bolster Northan's importance, the exclave of Navizia was added to the territory on 2 December 2022.
Northan remains in decline as a Governorate, and there has been recent debate on whether it should remain a Governorate or downgraded to Protectorate status.
Government
Until the beginning of localized rule in the Kingdom of Fontasia in late 2022, the Governorate of Northan, as with all Governorates were directly controlled by the Fontasian Royal Government. In most Praetorial elections, the Governorate has varied in Praetorial election political support, siding with the Populist Party of Fontasia in the Spring 2022 election, and then the Free Fontasia Party in the Fall 2022 election.
As of 2023, there are nine municipalities in the Governorate of Northan.

Geography
The Governorate of Northan is within the Assemblian Region of Fontasian territories, but it is isolated about a mile northeast of the northern border of the Governorate of Centropolis. It is surrounded on all sides by the United States. Northan also has an small exclave about five miles to its northeast, known as Navizia. The larger part of Northan, located in Assemblia is dominated by Lake Northan, a large natural freshwater lake. The Governorate surrounds the western, northern and eastern coastline of the Lake. There is one beach along the lake, located in the far south of the Governorate, and several jetties and protrusion along the north-central coastline, used as ports for kayaks and other small watercraft. The western expanse of the Governorate is almost all forest, with the exceptions being several fields and Carzvon Fields. The eastern part of the Governorate is swampy, forested lands with some more fields.
The climate of Northan is the same as all Assemblian Governorates. Unlike most parts of Fontasia, Northan is known for its abundance of unoccupied or abandoned buildings, due to the area being a large mental hospital facility in the late 1800s.
Culture
Northanian culture is practically mainstream Fontasian culture. Northan is known for its scenic lakeside coast and forests, and was popular for its rocket-launch viewing.
