The Grand Duke of Natal (Dutch: Groothertog van Natal; Afrikaans: Groothertog van Natal) is the sovereign, hereditary and absolute monarch of the Grand Duchy of Natal. The Grand Duke of Natal, who rules by divine right, theoretically holds absolute authority over Natal, however several sovereign powers have been given to government bodies. The current Grand Duke is Joseph I.

History

The monarchy of Natal was established as a title of nobility in the Commonwealth of Hobartstown and Victoria on 21 July 2014, with Joseph Emmanuel de Chavannes being declared Duke of Natal. The Natalian Duke became one of the most prominent politicians in the Commonwealth, becoming the Speaker of the House of Patricians of the Commonwealth. The Duke was also prominent in the Church of the Bregentines, becoming Bishop of Natal. The Natalian dukedom was elevated to a non-sovereign sub-national Grand Duchy on 8 August 2014. The following day, the Commonwealth was dissolved and Natal became independent.

Following Natal's independence on 9 August 2014, Joseph Emmanuel de Chavannes remained monarch as Joseph I, by the Grace of God, Grand Duke of Natal. A legislature, the Chamber of Lords, was established and a government, the Council of State, was instituted. The Monarch was endowed with supreme powers over the executive, legislative, and judicial powers of the state; however, the Chamber of Lords is allowed to pass legislation with Royal Consent and the Council of State carries out most administrative powers in the name of the Sovereign.
