Marhaenia, officially the People's Republic of Marhaenia (Indonesian: Republik Rakyat Marhaenia‎) is a self-proclaimed proto-state located in Indonesia. It is located entirely within the provinces of Central Java and Yogyakarta, officially claiming land from the regencies of Sukoharjo and Gunungkidul. The People's Republic has de facto complete sovereignty over several small strips of land within Bulu, Tawangsari, and Panggang, comprised of rural communities and thus has no major cities.

The PRM is one of the founding members of the Conference of Communist & Workers' Microstates.

Etymology

The name Marhaenia comes from the term "marhaen" with the suffix "-ia". The term "marhaen" is often used as a substitute for the term for the proletariat, also referring to commoners of low-to-medium class citizens. In official state documents, Marhaenia is a "nation of the commoners".

History

Foundation

The People's Republic of Marhaenia was founded on 13 March 2023 as the Socialist Republic of Marhaenia by Dipa Marhaen and several friends, driven by dissatisfaction with the bourgeois government of Indonesia. This process included drafting and reading the declaration of independence. Marhaenia's independence was achieved with the assistance of these friends, after which the drafting of the constitution began. The constitution was ratified on 18 May 2023 and has been the fundamental law of the People's Republic to date.

2024 Crisis

The 2024 Crisis refers to the period of ineffective government functioning from the beginning of the year until April. It culminated on May 1, 2024, when the People's Republic was dissolved and replaced by an interim government that lasted only a few days until it was dissolved on May 3, at which point the People's Republic was restored.

Politics and government

The Central People's Government serves as the main administrative body of the People's Republic. It operates within the framework of national laws, which establish the president's authority in accordance with the rule of law, alongside other state institutions and regulations.

President

The President of the People's Republic of Marhaenia serves as both the head of state and head of government. This position is held by the incumbent chairman of the people's party, who appoints the cabinet and acts as the commander-in-chief of the People's Republic's armed forces

Commune Councils

The Dewan Komune (Commune Councils) are composed of workers and peasants. Their members come from all the villages within the communes, and all members elect representatives to represent them in the People's Congress. The councils serve as the governing bodies overseeing the administration and management of the communes.

People's Congress

The Kongres Rakyat (People's Congress) is the legislative body of the People's Republic. It drafts and ratifies laws at the national level. Its members are elected representatives from each Dewan Komune (Commune Council), representing the interests of workers and peasants from every village through the communes.

Foreign relations

To date, Marhaenia has not received diplomatic recognition from the United Nations or any recognized sovereign state. Instead, it focuses on establishing diplomatic relations with other micronations and independence movements. Marhaenia's government cites the declarative theory of statehood, as articulated in the 1933 Montevideo Convention, as its legal justification for sovereignty, asserting that it meets all criteria to be considered a sovereign nation.

Economy

Marhaenia's economy operates under a socialist framework, primarily sustained by the sale of agricultural products to Indonesia. Additionally, Marhaenia produces household furniture items, with a notable portion of these goods also exported to Indonesia.

Culture

Marhaenia's culture is influenced by Javanese and Musi cultures, reflecting the dominant Javanese ethnicity among the majority of the population, with a minority of Musi ethnicity.

The Javanese are famous for their artistic culture, which is mainly influenced by Hindu-Buddhist religion, namely Wayang performances. The repertoire of Wayang stories or plays is largely based on the Ramayana and Mahabharata narratives. In addition to Indian influences, there are also Islamic and Western influences. Batik and keris are two forms of Javanese expression. Gamelan music, which is also found in Bali, plays an important role in Javanese cultural life and traditions.

One of the popular arts among the Musi people is Senjang. Senjang is a type of oral literary art (a kind of Talibun) combined with music and dance and is usually performed by a young couple. The traditional dance of the Musi People is the Setabik Dance, which is used as an official dance to welcome great guests visiting Musi Banyuasin Regency. Setabik dance is accompanied by traditional music and songs sung in the Musi dialect Malay language (Musi language). The culture and customs of the Musi tribe are heavily influenced by Malay and Islamic culture.
