The Representative of Vishwamitra to India (Hindi: भारत में विश्वामित्र के प्रतिनिधि), formerly known as the Ambassador of Vishwamitra to India is the official representative of the Rashtradhyaksh and the government of Vishwamitra in India and the head of the representative office in India. The position is currently held by Suryadeva Kapei since 12 August 2024.
The representative and chief of mission is a member of the diplomatic corps of Vishwamitra. Vishwamitra unilaterally recognized India informally in 2010 and then formally by a presidential decree on 1 January 2017, however, since the recognition is not currently reciprocated, the position is - at present - unaccredited, and serves a primarily ceremonial role. The duties of the representative includes representing the interests of the Rashtradhyaksh and the government of Vishwamitra in India and catering the interests of the non-residential (overseas) citizens of Vishwamitra residing in India or are of Indian origin.
The position was first created on 23 December 2020 with the appointment of Anirban Phatowali, Rajpramukh of Kamrupa as the ambassador to India. The position of the representative was created on 12 August 2024. The representative has concurrently been accredited to Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka since 15 October 2024.
History
The position of the ambassador in India has unofficially existed since 2010 with the President serving as Ambassador to India in their capacity as Chief Ambassador of the nation. The position was formally created on 23 December 2020 along with the creation of a full-fledged mission located in Guwahati. The first ambassador was His Majesty Anirban Phatowali, Rajpramukh of Kamrupa who served in office until being replaced by Her Majesty Tanishkaa Patranabish, Rajpramukh of Beltola on 22 September 2021. She remained in office until being replaced by the Consul-General in East India Suryadeva Kapei on 11 October 2022 following which the embassy was moved to Bengaluru.
In a cabinet decision, the regular diplomatic missions accredited to macronations which are unilaterally recognized by Vishwamitra were reorganized to honorary status on 8 May 2023. Thereupon, the ambassador was re-designated as honorary ambassador. Kapei continued to serve as honorary ambassador in India until the mission's dissolution on 28 February 2024 following a decision of the Ministry of External Affairs to dissolve all honorary missions, thereby discharging all honorary diplomats from their office.
The representative office in India was re-established on 12 August 2024 and Suryadeva Kapei was re-appointed as the head of the mission for the second time.
