The Kingdom of Italoria, commonly referred to as Italoria, is a self-declared sovereign state, known by external observers as a micronation, in the United Kingdom. Founded in its current form on 21 October 2023 by King Colin I, Italoria is a unitary state under a constitutional monarchy.
Italoria's political system is embedded in the the Constitution of Italoria, which was ratified on 21 October 2023 and took inspiration from the UK's political system as well as the political system of the Kingdom of Italy - to create the current system used by Italoria. The monarch serves as head of state, and prime minister as head of government with the parliament of Italoria serving as the bicameral national legislature.
History
Italoria in its current form is sometimes internally known as the sixth kingdom, as there have been five previous iterations of Italoria that ended up getting disbanded - until Italoria in it's current form was established on 21 October 2023. Italoria in its current form has been the longest lasting form of the state.
The current iteration of Italoria has so far been the only one to have a constitution and be 'properly' established as a micronation.
Since its establishment, Italoria has been developing out of secessionist sentiments in the nation, aiming for Italoria to become a fully recognised sovereign state.
Government and Politics
Italoria's political system is a blend of the British political system and the Kingdom of Italy's political system. Italoria is under a parliamentary, constitutional monarchy form of government.
Monarchy
The Monarchy of Italoria is the hereditary head of state of Italoria. The monarchy's power is granted by the constitution. While the monarchy is constitutional, the constitution vests the monarch with notable executive powers. However, in practice the monarch usually exercises them on the advice of the government and parliament.
The monarch's powers include appointing all state officials, signing all bills into law or vetoing them, proposing legislation to parliament and serving as commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
The monarchy is hereditary and is passed down in according with succession law and the constitution.
Prime Minister
The Prime Minister of Italoria is the nation's head of government. The role is not officially established by the constitution, but has some constitutional roots.
The prime minister is appointed by the monarch and chairs the cabinet. The prime minister nominates all other ministers for appointment to office by the monarch, and acts as one of the senior-most advisors to the monarch. They are usually a member of parliament, and so can propose legislation to parliament, but is not constitutionally required to be a parliamentarian. In the event they are not a member of parliament, they have a right to request to speak in either house of parliament and can request the monarch submit legislation to parliament on the officeholder's behalf.
Parliament
The Parliament of Italoria is the bicameral legislative body of the kingdom. It consists of a House of Lords as the upper house, and a House of Commons as the lower house.
The House of Lords consists of members appointed to the house by the monarch from the nation's nobility, some members of the royal family, and senior clergy. The House of Commons consists of members elected by the Italorian public to represent single member constituencies.
Parliament, like the monarch, is vested with legislative ability by the constitution. However, parliament acts as the primary legislators of the kingdom. Laws that reach a simple majority in both Houses of Parliament and receive royal assent become law.
The House of Commons also provides scrutiny to the government, being able to impeach ministers and bring their impeachment in front of the House of Lords who are constitutionally granted the role of High Court of Justice.
Military
The Armed Forces of Italoria serve as the military forces of the kingdom. It consists of three branches - the Italorian Army, Royal Italorian Navy, and Royal Italorian Air Force.
The monarch serves as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, and has a role in regulating them. As well as this the government, primarily the prime minister and ministry of defence, have a say in the oversight of the armed forces.
The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) is the highest ranked member of the armed forces and is charged with the genera oversight of the armed forces. The CDS is appointed by the monarch.
Foreign Affairs
Italoria has not yet established any formal relations with other micronations, but aims to establish relations with likeminded states.
Culture
Italorian culture is inspired and influenced by European culture. Christianity serves as the official religion of the state with the Church of Italoria serving as the state-backed church, and English as the official language. Popular sports in Italoria include basketball and archery. The monarch is also seen as a national cultural figure, sitting as a symbol of the state.
Geography
While currently located in the UK, Italoria claims the Althorpe Islands off the coast of Australia. Italoria aims to preserve the wildlife on the islands, while developing the nation physically as the Italorian government aims for true independence for the nation.
