Kalapani is a constituency represented in the Lok Sabha, the unicameral legislature of Vishwamitra and is one of the 6 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state of Purvanchal. This constituency was established in 2016 and has continuously been represented since then.
History
The constituency came into existence for the first time during the June 2016 when union finance minister and former vice president Bishnu Chetry was constitutionally required to be elected to the house and hence under constitutional limits, a constituency was created for him to be elected. In the 7th and 8th Lok Sabha while he was serving his vice president, his brother Manoj Chetry was elected from the same seat. Bishnu Chetry was again elected to the house from the constituency in the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Lok Sabha.
The seat was represented by Rory Leonard in the 13th and 14th Lok Sabha. He was initially elected on a ticket of the Royalist Party of Vishwamitra and later changed his allegiance later to the National People's Congress. In the 2022 general election to the 15th Lok Sabha, NPC president Arthur Lacey-Scott-FitzLacia defeated sitting MP and VNP president Rory Leonard in the constituency by a big margin.
The NPC has been the most successful party in the constituency, having won the constituency for six times.
