The Highland Commonwealth, commonly known as Highland (not to be confused with the Free Empire of Highland), is a micronation located in the Ohio River Valley in Eastern North America. It is entirely bordered by the United States. Highland was founded on July 11, 2022, in response to growing political tensions in its predecessor country, the United States.
Currently, the Highland Commonwealth is still in its early stages of development. Its goal is to provide its citizens with basic human rights and equality for all, aiming to be a nation where everyone can live in peace and enjoy their freedoms.
History
The Highland Commonwealth was established on July 11, 2022, by three 17-year-old teenagers: Aiden Sullivan, Noah Wood, and Jacob Weber. They claimed their properties, totaling 0.0046 km² (50,529.5 square feet) of land, and proclaimed Cincinnati as their first capital, though they were based in the Northern Kentucky/Ohio River Valley region.
On July 12, 2022, Aiden Sullivan and Noah Wood were appointed acting President and Prime Minister, respectively. Later that month, elections confirmed their positions, with Aiden Sullivan elected as President in the 2022 presidential election and Noah Wood elected Prime Minister by the provisional parliament (also known as the 0th Parliament of Highland).
On May 10, 2023, the nation changed its name from the "Federal Republic of Highland" to the "Highland Commonwealth."
On September 7, 2023, Prime Minister Noah Wood was removed from office due to internal affairs, and Jacob Weber, the Cainteoir of Parliament, was appointed acting Prime Minister.
On July 12, 2024, the Highland Commonwealth was transformed into a monarchy, with the current (now former) President declared "King of the Highland," taking on the regnal name "Avacyn I."
Politics and government
The Highland Commonwealth operates under a Unitary Parliamentary system, with a Monarch as its head of state and a Prime Minister as its head of government. Its legislative body, known as the Provisional Parliament of Highland, is currently in the process of drafting the nation's constitution. Once the constitution is approved by the Provisional Parliament, the first official parliamentary session will be convened. The Highland Commonwealth is committed to establishing a stable and democratic governance structure that ensures the rights and freedoms of its citizens.
