The Hashemite Kingdom of Raritania, also known as Raritania (Arabic: مملكة راريتانيا الهاشمية), is a self-declared Islamic monarchy and micronation in North America. It is located on the east coast of North America, bordering only the United States. It was established by a group of Pakistani-Americans in 2013, but Raritania embodies a vision that dates back to 1999.

On November 1, 2013, Raritania declared independence from the United States, solidifying its status as a sovereign nation. On January 1, 2014, the Hashemite Royal family, comprising King Yusuf I and Prince Ammaar, Duke of Auliya, assumed the ruling authority of the monarchy.

Raritania's mainland territory spans 3.18 square miles. The kingdom also holds overseas territories in Asia, Europe, and Oceania.

With a population of almost 500 people, Raritania takes great pride in its cultural and religious heritage, considering itself a successor to the esteemed Rashidun Caliphate. The kingdom is dedicated to upholding its legitimacy, seriousness, and commitment to its responsibilities as a micronation.

The capital city of Raritania is Qadirabad, which is home to 150 residents. Raritania maintains a small military force, ensuring the nation's security and defense.

The Kingdom of Raritania stands as a testament to the determination and dedication of its people. As a self-declared Islamic monarchy, Raritania continues to uphold its cultural heritage, foster international relations, and embody the values of legitimacy and seriousness as a micronation.

Etymology

The Hashemite Kingdom of Raritania draws its name from the Raritan Bay and Raritan River, two significant geographical features that have shaped the region's history for generations. The name "Raritan" is believed to have originated from one of the Lenape languages, which are part of the Algonquian language group. While there are several interpretations of its meaning, it may be derived from "Naraticong," signifying the "river beyond the island."

The Dutch pronunciation of "Raritan" as "Raritan" is also attributed to the Lenape language. "Wawitan" or "rarachons" are possible origins, meaning "forked river" or "stream overflows." This rich linguistic heritage connects Raritania to its indigenous roots and highlights the significance of its waterways.

Historically, the region was inhabited by various indigenous groups, and the first known group to be referred to as the Raritan was also known as the Sanhicans. Subsequently, another group, known by various names such as Wiechquaeskecks, Wisquaskecks, Roaton, Raritanghe, and Raritanoos, settled in the Raritan watershed area after the first group departed.

The association of Raritania's name with its geographical features and indigenous history serves as a reminder of the nation's deep-rooted connection to its land and people. As the Hashemite Kingdom of Raritania continues its journey, it carries with it the echoes of its past, celebrating the significance of the Raritan Bay and the diverse cultures that have shaped the region over time.

History

The history of Raritania dates back to its earliest inhabitants, the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. The Unami, a group among the Lenape, established their presence along the Raritan River each summer, migrating from their hunting grounds in the north.

With the English gaining control from the Dutch in 1664, the region was divided into two provinces, East Jersey and West Jersey. In 1683, the general assembly of East Jersey defined the boundaries of Middlesex County, encompassing plantations on both sides of the Raritan River, extending to Cheesequake Harbor in the east, and then southwest to the Provincial line. This delineation marked the borders of Middlesex County, along with Bergen, Essex, and Monmouth counties.

Among the original landowners in the area was Thomas Warne, one of the 24 proprietors of East Jersey, whose son became one of the earliest European residents in the Cheesequake area in 1683. Additionally, John and Susannah Brown received a substantial land grant of 1,000 acres (4.0 km2) from the King of England in 1737, leading to the establishment of Brownville, which now lies within the Kazim province as Browntown.

Original Independence Movement

In 1999, ten friends migrated from Pakistan to the USA for a better life. They developed a goal of establishing a Muslim nation in North America. Their endeavor led to the creation of the Islamic Republic of Waliustan, though it wasn't officially recognized as a micronation. Today, it's referred to as the Original Independence Movement in Raritania.

Independence Declaration

On November 11, 2023, Hashemia proclaimed its sovereignty, formally separating from the United States of America. Hashemia was a successor to the former Islamic Republic of Waliustan. This declaration led to the founding of Qadirabad, the inaugural settlement of the Hashemian people, holding an initial populace of 80 individuals.

Election of the Royal House

On January 1, 2014, as the new year commenced, the Hashemian populace participated in a crucial vote to determine their ruling dynasty. The ballot featured several houses including Hashemite, Patidar, Sicily, Valnyetsza, and Ricosa. Within a swift 24-hour period, the election concluded with a resounding 75% majority in favor of the Hashemite royal family. King Yusuf I ascended to the throne on his 11th birthday, January 21, 2014, marking his coronation.

Hashemian Civil War

On October 10, 2015, a progressive federalist faction within the Raritan Republican Party staged a demonstration outside the Qadirabad Government Office, advocating for significant changes within Hashemia's governance structure. Originating from West Qadirabad, these federalists pushed for either a transition to a republican form of government or territorial division. Additionally, they proposed renaming the nation to something less explicitly Islamic, with the suggestion of "Republic of Heritage Woods" to reflect its geographical context. However, the reigning monarch rejected this proposal due to potential complications in future expansions. The resulting civil unrest escalated into a conflict between West and East Qadirabad, with the latter initially outnumbered. Nevertheless, with support from allied micronations, East Qadirabad managed to neutralize the opposition in West Qadirabad, ultimately leading to its return to the jurisdiction of the Kingdom.

Colonization

On December 22, 2016, King Yusuf I, alongside the esteemed Hashemian royal lineage, initiated the establishment of Hashemian colonies spanning one square mile in Karachi, Pakistan. This strategic endeavor marked a pivotal moment in Hashemia's history, catalyzing the nation's journey toward international recognition. Pakistan, in a de facto capacity, acknowledged the presence of Hashemian territories, underscoring the burgeoning diplomatic standing of the nascent nation on the global stage.

Hashemian National Project

The Hashemian National Project, sanctioned by King Yusuf I on January 8, 2019, in contemporary Badayun, Raritania, constituted a strategic endeavor aimed at territorial expansion from Qadirabad to Badayun. Employing decisive military action, Hashemian forces ventured northward, swiftly securing Khaled City as their initial conquest, thereby laying the foundation for subsequent territorial acquisitions. Proceeding northwestward through dense woodland terrain, Hashemian operatives, utilizing bicycles for tactical mobility, successfully annexed Badayun, thereby augmenting the nation's populace by an additional 1,000 inhabitants. This campaign precipitated a sustained demographic upsurge across the nation, underscoring a notable triumph for Hashemia. The populace commemorated this milestone in Badayun on January 22, 2019. However, the following day witnessed a rebellion attempt instigated by anti-Islamist dissident Decker, who expressed vehement opposition to the expansionist agenda. Decker, subsequently exiled from the realm, faced punitive measures including corporal chastisement, epitomized by a hundred lashes administered in accordance with Hudud principles.

The Pandemic

In early 2020, the COVID-19 virus proliferated across Hashemia, precipitating a nationwide pandemic. Despite the virulent spread, Hashemia recorded a relatively modest count of 18 reported cases throughout the entirety of 2020, with no associated fatalities documented. While the pandemic exerted considerable strain on the national economy, the resilience of technological enterprises and the burgeoning cryptocurrency sector facilitated a robust economic resurgence, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Concurrently, in response to the educational challenges posed by the pandemic, the Hashemian Public Schools, subsequently rebranded as the Raritanian Public Schools, were established, offering online learning modalities. Furthermore, Hashemia implemented a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination campaign, effectively mitigating further transmission, with no reported cases recorded beyond February 2021.

Tartarese War

On August 17, 2021, the Republic of Tartary launched an assault on the capital city of Qadirabad, belonging to the Kingdom of Hashemia. With both sides deploying four personnel each, the Tartarese forces were swiftly overwhelmed, leading to their defeat. Within a remarkably brief span of four hours, the territory of Tartary, along with its capital, Tarillamun, was annexed by Hashemia.

First Appearance Online

On September 2, 2022, the Kingdom enlisted in the r/micronations subreddit and became cognizant of the existence of the Union of Socialist Republics (USR), igniting a fervent animosity towards the latter.

First Interaction with USR

On September 3, 2022, the Kingdom of Hashemia issued a formal declaration of hostilities against the Union of Socialist Republics (USR), colloquially referred to as Almendria. The casus belli stemmed from revelations implicating one of the USR's leaders, Terry McKeen, in associations with Nazism, notably through his leadership of Zeprana, a nation espousing Nazi ideology. The conflict, spanning a duration of six hours, culminated in a stalemate, with neither belligerent achieving decisive victory and no recorded casualties on either side.

United Micronations (UMN)

On July 5, 2023, Raritania became a member of the United Micronations (UMN), an organization established by Alexa of CSX Empire.

VECTO

On July 5, 2023, the Kingdom of Hashemia formally entered the Vanarian East Coalition Treaty Organization (VECTO). On the same date, Hashemia, in collaboration with fellow VECTO member states, engaged in a military campaign against the United Nazi Nations of Almendria (UNNA), resulting in a resounding victory for the coalition and a subsequent surge in VECTO's global standing. However, this triumph was accompanied by escalating tensions with certain other nations. A period of prosperity ensued for both Raritania and the broader VECTO alliance. Subsequently, due to the United Socialist Republics's involvement in the 3rd Colanese Civil War, VECTO found itself embroiled in conflict with the USR, exacerbating an existing state of cold war between the two entities.

Name Change

On July 15, 2023, following a decade under the name Hashemia, the nation underwent a significant rebranding, adopting the new title of the Hashemite Kingdom of Raritania.

The Dark Age

Following Raritania's implementation of controversial legislative amendments, a significant exodus of VECTO members ensued, plunging the nation into a period commonly referred to as "The Dark Age." During this tumultuous period, remaining VECTO affiliates labored tirelessly to salvage the alliance's cohesion, albeit shouldering the blame for its perceived shortcomings. The departure of the Colanese Empire served as a harbinger of VECTO's inevitable demise, prompting leadership to gradually disengage from the alliance, ultimately resulting in its dissolution. Despite these setbacks, the Hashemite Kingdom of Raritania persisted in its efforts to rehabilitate its reputation, as evidenced by a referendum wherein unanimous support was voiced for the contested legislation. However, the monarchy's steadfast refusal to repeal the law drew the ire of the USR, a Nazi socialist micronation, culminating in a cyber attack on Raritania's Discord server in August 2023. Faced with relentless assaults and the imperative of reconstruction, the President opted to delete the server, subsequently establishing a new platform. Nonetheless, the focus of Raritania's leadership shifted towards bolstering its physical territory and populace, relegating digital endeavors to a secondary priority.

New Golden Age

On August 6, 2023, King Yusuf, the leader of Raritania, collaborated with the head of the Principality of Chrimate and President Ziron of the Democratic Republic of Valosstria to establish the Union of North Atlantic Micronations (UNAM). Following the cyber attack, the server was newly remade, experiencing rapid growth in membership compared to its predecessor. Despite subsequent raids by the USR targeting both UNAM and the Sabarian Federation, an ally of Raritania, but recovery efforts were swift and successful.

Peace era

A period characterized by tranquility and economic growth ensued for the nation. By November 2023, the nation's Discord server boasted a membership of 80 individuals, while its cyber military had expanded to encompass 20 personnel.

The conflict with the USR

On November 22nd, 2023, the United Socialist Republics initiated a series of assaults, famously dubbed "The Grand Crusade," with the ambition of subjugating the entire micronational community. Recognizing the imminent threat, the Kingdom swiftly sounded the alarm, issuing warnings to all micronations and advocating for heightened security measures across Discord servers. As an integral member of the reconstituted Alliance of Micronational Unity, the nation mobilized its cyber forces to confront the despised communist aggressors. The Taksovian Empire, in an act of defiance, declared war on the alliance in its entirety, escalating the conflict. Despite intermittent truces, hostilities persisted, culminating in further server raids and the devastating nuclear bombardment of Raritania's staunch ally, The Republic of Vertricht, by USR forces. Following a string of setbacks, the USR's offensive gradually waned, heralding the de facto conclusion of the war. On February 4, 2024, the collapse of the USR marked the definitive end of hostilities.

Territories

Cheesequake Territory (Cheesequake Park)

Cheesequake Territory, commonly known as Cheesequake, is a park and national reserve located in the Hashemite Kingdom of Raritania. This breathtaking 1,610-acre expanse was once celebrated as Cheesequake State Park, a cherished natural gem that flourished under the care of the United States. Its transformation from a state park to a territory within Raritania came about in a surprising turn of events in July 2023.

In the heart of the Hashemite Kingdom of Raritania lies Cheesequake Territory, a picturesque landscape that beckons nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. Once known as Cheesequake State Park, this 2.52-square-mile sanctuary was established through the foresight and dedication of the New Jersey Legislature in the 1930s. With an initial allocation of $100,000 in 1937, the state set out to preserve this pristine land for generations to come.

The park's history unfolded in January 1938 when the state acquired a 250-acre tract of fertile farmland and a stately Civil War-era mansion from the Favier brothers. Over the next two years, additional lands were acquired, expanding the park's boundaries and enriching its ecological diversity. The Civilian Conservation Corps, part of the Works Progress Administration, played a crucial role in the park's development, undertaking projects that enhanced its natural beauty and accessibility.

With dedicated efforts and skilled labor, the park's transformation took shape, and it officially opened its gates to the public in June 1940. For decades, Cheesequake State Park thrived, drawing countless visitors who reveled in its lush forests, glistening ponds, and unique flora and fauna. Families and friends gathered for picnics, creating memories that would last a lifetime. The park became a cherished destination, fostering a sense of community and appreciation for the great outdoors.

However, in an unexpected twist, the park's governance and sovereignty shifted in July 2023 when it was annexed by the micronational kingdom of Raritania. The United States relinquished control, and Cheesequake State Park was no more, replaced by the newly named Cheesequake Territory, now under the administration of Raritania's Division of Parks and Forestry.

As the news of the park's annexation spread, it evoked a mix of emotions among those who had held a deep affection for Cheesequake State Park. Some welcomed the change, viewing it as an opportunity for cross-cultural collaboration and potential enhancements to the park's amenities. Others felt a sense of nostalgia, fondly reminiscing about the park's original identity.

Today, Cheesequake Territory stands as an alluring destination within Raritania, offering the same captivating landscapes, vibrant biodiversity, and historical significance that once drew visitors from far and wide. The park's trails and scenic viewpoints invite explorers to immerse themselves in the beauty of the natural world, leaving an indelible mark on the park's history and carrying forth its legacy into the future. The memories of Cheesequake State Park live on in the hearts of those who cherished it, as Cheesequake Territory continues to thrive and inspire admiration in the hearts of visitors, forever preserving its unique charm and allure.
