The Golden Road is a self-declared sovereign state, often described as a micronation, located in the Northeastern United States. It is bordered on north, east, and west by the United States, and by the Commonwealth of New Virginia to the south. The Golden Road was established as a political center for the Church of the Golden Road to Unlimited Devotion, acting as a Vatican City style entity for the governance of the Church.

Etymology

The Golden Road's name is taken from the Church of the Golden Road to Unlimited Devotion's name. The name originates in a song titled 'The Golden Road to Unlimited Devotion', which was written by the Grateful Dead in the late 1960's.

History

The Golden Road was established in late 2020 by Her Holiness, Stella Blue I with the assistance of Her Holiness, Sister Jane as a political and territorial entity under the control of the Church of the Golden Road to Unlimited Devotion. It was founded after several years of development within the Church. Originally, the Church's main theological focus surrounded the music and culture of the Grateful Dead and similar jam bands. However, in mid to late 2020 the Church supported and allowed the foundation of the Nordalian Church, which focused entirely on the music of the Velvet Underground.

In November 2020, a small stretch of land directly bordering the Commonwealth of New Virginia declared independence. This small stretch of land that would become known as the Golden Road declared itself to be under the "Supreme and divine jurisdiction of the Church of the Golden Road to Unlimited Devotion".

Government and Politics

The Golden Road is governed as an elective, absolute monarchy under a theocracy. The state recognizes the Estimated Prophet, the leading figure in the CGRUD, as the head of state and government. The Estimated Prophet of the Church is recognized as the Sovereign of the Golden Road and is addressed as such. In theory the Sovereign wields absolute authority over state affairs.

The Sovereign has the right to appoint a First Minister, who serves as a de facto head of government. It is the duty of the First Minister to carry out decisions implemented by the Sovereign and to, in the absence of the Sovereign, chair over the Divine Council. The First Minister must be a member of the Divine Council, and a member of the Church.

The Divine Council serves as a basic legislative body and a de facto advisory body to the Sovereign. Though they are not able to implement policy over the state, they are given the responsibility to produce legislation for the approval of the Sovereign. Divine Counselors are appointed for life by the Sovereign. Divine Counselors do not need to be members of the Church in theory.
