The General Currency Unit (initialised: GCU; symbol: GCU), sometimes known as the Dee-Filorux General Currency Unit, is a micronational currency unit with a value determined by taking the average of the three exchange rates for one troy ounce (1 t.oz.) of gold (Au), silver (Ag) and platinum (Pt) then dividing (÷) by ten-thousand (10,000). The GCU was created by the General Currency Commission (then known as the Dee-Filorux General Currency Commission) under regulation from the Lordministry of Economics & Currency of the Princian Commonwealth to give micronations a stable currency unit to peg their currencies to so as to aid currency conversion within the micronational community. Princia's own Royal dramme is pegged to the GCU at 1Đ = 7GCU and its secondary currency, the Princian kankhik, is pegged at parity. Micronations with currencies pegged to the GCU are collectively known as the General Currency Area, or GCA for short.

Current Exchange Rate

The exchange rate of the GCU is determined by taking an average of the exchange rates for gold (Au), silver (Ag) and platinum (Pt).

1GCU = approx. GB£0.08 or US$0.09 (as of 7th September 2022)

Revaluations

Following a request by Prince Joshua of the Princian Commonwealth, the GCU has been revalued to an average of the exchange rates of gold (Au), silver (Ag) and platinum (Pt) with effect from 9th April 2021 21:30 (9:30pm) BST. The GCU was previously valued at one-thirtieth of a troy ounce (1/30 t.oz.) of silver (Ag) until revaluation.

History

Early History

When the GCU was created on 11th July 2020, it was originally worth one gram (1g) of silver (Ag), but after a suggestion by the Herbatrean Republic, who were considering pegging the Herbatrean Thu to the GCU, the Dee-Filorux GCC launched an investigation into the revaluing of the GCU to one troy ounce (1 t.oz.) of silver (Ag). It was decided that on the 22nd July 2020 at 20:30 (8:30pm) BST, the GCU was to be revalued to be one-thirtieth of a troy ounce (1/30 t.oz.) of silver (Ag) in order for the GCU to remain similar to that when it was worth a gram.

Later History

On the 9th April 2021, it was proposed by Prince Joshua that the GCU should be revalued once again, but this time to an average of three exchange rates - that of gold (Au), silver (Ag) and platinum (Pt). The Dee-Filorux GCC promptly accepted and the GCU was revalued with effect from 9th April 2021 21:30 (9:30pm) BST.

Adoption by the Herbatrean Republic

On 13th July 2020 Herbatrean President Ripley Thomas confirmed that Herbatrea was considering fixing the Herbatrean Thu to a silver standard, but a few weeks later it was revealed that the Herbatrean Thu would instead be fixed to the West/Central African Franc and the Euro.
