Fort Sobieski (High Napranian: Sobieski Fort) is an earthworks fortification in Ałmiagrad, Valenowa, which is owned and maintained by the Armed Forces of the Polonian Presidential Dependency of Valenowa. It sits atop Sobieski Hill, overlooking the Valenian provinces of Southern Ałmiagrad, Wilhelmsgrad, and Ałmia Krasznowie, and guarding the Southern border of the Polonian Presidential Dependency of Valenowa.
Etymology
Fort Sobieski is named for its location, Sobieski Hill, which was in turn named after John III Sobieski (Polish: Jan III Sobieski), former King of Poland-Lithuania. It was named, more specifically, to commemorate the Siege of Vienna on 12 September 1683, and the charge of the Winged Hussars down Kahlenberg Mountain (led by John III Sobieski) to lift the siege. The hill was officially named by Grand Duke Michał II of Naprzódsk on 12 September 2018, on the 335th anniversary of the charge.
Construction
Sobieski Hill was officially designated as a military position by the government of the former Grand Duchy of Naprzódsk in late 2019, and construction of the Fort itself began soon after. Initially, the process was undertaken entirely by hand, and the fort was composed of a single fighting hole that was gradually expanded and reinforced as time went on.
As it sits today, Fort Sobieski is composed of the original collapsed entrenchments, the South bastion of the future Town of Sobieski, a large ditch and embankment, and a number of reinforcements constructed with locally sourced wood, stone, and reclaimed cinder blocks.
Greater Napranian Defense Network
Fort Sobieski is one of multiple fortified military positions currently under construction or under the control of the Valenian Armed Forces, which will ultimately culminate in the creation of the Greater Napranian Defense Network upon their completion. This network is named after the predecessor to Valenowa, the Grand Duchy of Naprzódsk. The Greater Napranian Defense Network, not including Fort Sobieski, will also consist of:
- Fort Bołchidow
- Zamorski Castle
- Valenski Castle
- Granite Line (fortress)
