Role
The colonel-in-chief of a regiment is its patron, who has a ceremonial role in the activity of the regiment. Unless the holder of the title is the monarch who is the Commander-in-Chief, the colonel-in-chief's role is usually non-operational and does not inherently give them the authority to issue orders to the regiment. Colonels-in-chief are kept informed of all important activities of the regiment and pay occasional visits to its units. The chief purpose of the colonel-in-chief is to maintain a direct link between the regiment and the royal family.
The position of colonel-in-chief is distinct from the other ceremonial posts of colonel of the regiment and honorary colonel.
Colonels-in-chief are normally appointed by the monarch, or on the invitation of the regiment.
