With McGrath's assistance, on 1 November, John I took claim on the Fox Islands, a long-disputed territory between Baustralia and the McGrathic states. Subsequently, McGrath was made Governor-General, and Baron of Davidson, in the Dominion of Fox Islands, and became a Member of the Order of the Kingdom of Baustralia and Commander of the Order of the Baustralian Empire. He was granted his first coat of arms on 13 November. About a month later, on 17 December, he was removed from the position of Governor-General for certain derogatory remarks. He also lost his titles and honours.

In an attempt to make good with the government, McGrath enlisted in the Baustralian Army as a Sergeant in the King's Grenadiers. After a few days, he succeeded the Prime Minister, Sir John Timpson, as High Commissioner of York, governing land formerly claimed by McGrath's former state, the Catholique Socialist Republic.

He remained in that post until 5 January, when Mandatory York was dissolved and reformed back into the CSR. The same day, he became a Knight of the Gadus, and a Commander of the Order of the Baustralian Empire. On 15 January, with Cameron I of Ikonia, the Crown decided the pair "took up arms against the King", and was demoted to Corporal, and removed as a Knight of the Gadus. He was made Lord Davidson again on 28 February.

In April, McGrath had thought of ways to start conflicts with King John I, in an attempt to destroy Baustralia. They both decided to end Baustralia by starting a war. The plan was that Morris would give up Kapreburg in favor of creating an Islamic Republic, and McGrath would annex former Kapreburg and give it to Baustralia. On 2 April 2019, the Baustralian Crown, on advice of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, accepted the land. However, after the land was given, it was found that the Kapresh Constitution did not permit the ceding of the land.

Baustralia successfully controlled Kapreburg, forming the Dominion of Kapreburg, and then convicted McGrath for treason in the court case Rex v. McGrath. He was stripped of rank, titles, and decorations. He then renounced his citizenship, though this was not legal for he was still "serving sentence". He made a deal with the King to serve in the Baustralian Army again in exchange for a pardon. He re-enlisted on 27 May into the Baustralian Medical Branch. In July, he was made a Member of the Order of the Baustralian Empire. The same day, he also became the Member of Parliament for Taylor, a piece of land given to Baustralia by his state, in his newly founded Worker's Party. Upon return of the land, he changed constituencies to New Texas, and on 9 August to McNevin. He served as Leader of the Opposition from 10 September until 22 September 2019 when he became the 2nd Prime Minister until 7 October 2019 when he resigned. He also became a Brigadier in the Baustralian Army and commanded the 1st Division.

On 18 February, he was promoted to Major general, before, on 12 April, being declared a persona non-grata by the Parliament of Baustralia under the premiership of rival Sir Nick Sullivan. He appealed the Act before the Supreme Court, which was dismissed later that night by Supreme Justice Lord Jenkinson of Worthing, his former vice-president of Quebec. The Act was repealed, and he rejoined the army under similar promises as after the Kapresh crisis. He ranked a Major and Deputy Commandant of the Kingdom's Secret Service Brigade.

It was then he became deputy commanding officer of the Royal Baustralian Regiment. On 19 October, a letter-patent was issued by King John I cancelling his peerage. On 2 November, he was released from the Baustralian Army, and legally lost Baustralian citizenship.

On 2 February, he resumed the Worker's Party of Baustralia, now rebranded as the Communist Party. As the party grew, on 24 Feburary, the government of Baustralia passed the Political Activities Act effectively banning the Communist Party from Parliament. It was required to reorganize by 26 March, though the ban was lifted on the 3rd by order of the House of Lords, deeming the ban unconstitutional. On 12 September, after the failure of the question on the national arms referendum regarding the escutcheon of the royal arms, his request to rescind citizenship was approved.

After a constituency reshuffle, he was elected as MP for Monaghan and the Duke of Wells joined his party as a second member, a requirement for registration. Later, both members crossed the floor to the Conservative Party, and stood for election as Leader of the Conservative Party. After minimal debate from the sitting Prime Minister, McGrath became Leader and Prime Minister, appointing the Duke as Deputy Prime Minister.
