2022 Georgienstinian official name change referendum
The 2022 Georgienstinian official name change referendum took place on 14–15 August 2022 in Georgienstine to ask the electorate whether the country should change its official name of "Social Republic" and what the new official name should be if it is replaced.
The National Congress unanimously passed a constitutional amendment presented by Nicolas Caiazzo officializing the change.
Background
On 20 August 2020, Georgienstine changed its official name of "Democratic Republic" to "Social Republic". Since then, there has been a minor controversy mostly propagated by the Georgienstinian left-wing movement as the name was shared with the Italian Social Republic.
On 11 August 2021, President Raphaël Olivier called the referendum for 14–15 August 2022. He claimed this was the only way to know public opinion on the matter, as no major party had ever campaigned on the issue during an election.
Campaign
Supporters and opponents of the referendum have both campaigned in favour of their side. On 12 August 2022, it was announced that Majority Leader Alexandre Olivier and Minority Leader Nicolas Caiazzo would be founding the bipartisan "YES! For Georgienstine and I!" organization supporting the official name change. The same day, Sean Dunkerque and Matthew Tonna founded the "NO! Keep the Social Republic!" organization opposing the official name change.
