The Workers' Party of Marbordo (WPM) is the founding and sole ruling party of the Democratic Republic of Marbordo. Founded in 2024 from a merger between the Communist Party of the VISSR and several smaller micronational communist parties on Vancouver Island, it is the oldest active political party in Marbordo.
Officially, the WPM is a Marxist–Leninist party guided by "Marcus Salisbury Thought," the political theories of its general secretary and founder of Marbordo, Marcus Salisbury. It is considered the revolutionary vanguard of the Marbordan people and the ultimate source of leadership in the country. Smaller political parties are permitted to operate in Marbordo as long as they accept the leading role of the WPM.
History
In 2019, the Vancouver Island Soviet Socialist Republic, or VISSR, was established by Canadian micronationalists Dustin Carlson, Marcus Salisbury, and Steven Liu. While largely a tongue-in-cheek political experiment and not a serious micronational venture, the VISSR nevertheless experienced some initial success in late 2019 and throughout 2020. By 2021 however, its progress had considerably slowed, and the VISSR became almost entirely inactive a short time later.
Carlson would go on to completely restructure the VISSR as the Dominion of Vancouver Island, creating tensions with Salisbury and Liu who were still committed to building a socialist state on Vancouver Island. The two men each established their own independent micronations but found little success. In 2024, Salisbury reached an agreement with Carlson to inherit the rights to all VISSR-era assets, including its defunct communist party. The party was then merged with nearby communist parties headed by Steven Liu and other aspiring micronationalists to create the Workers' Party on 15 July 2024. Salisbury was elected its general secretary and together with Liu, quickly set to work building the foundation for a new one-party state to acheive the goals of the party. On 13 August 2024, the Democratic Republic of Marbordo was officially founded.
Ideology
The party rulebook states that all party members are "committed to upholding the revolutionary principles of Marxism–Leninism" and claims that the ultimate goal of the party is the creation of a "communist society where the wants and needs of all the peoples of Marbordo are fulfilled." Marcus Salisbury Thought, the self-proclaimed ideology of the WPM, combines Marxism-Leninism with the Salisbury's personal theories regarding state construction within a socialist framework. The WPM considers itself as part of the worldwide leftist and socialist movements and dedicates its efforts to promoting the causes of communist and socialist organizations around the globe.
Organization
A party congress was convened following the foundation of the WPM in 2024 to elect a central committee, which in turn organized a politburo and party secretariat. Party rules stipulate that a congress must be held at least once every five years, but can take place whenever it is deemed necessary by the central committee.
Symbols
The emblem of the WPM is an adaptation of the common hammer and sickle which instead features a gardening trowel and fishing hook. The "hook and trowel", as it is popularly called, represents the agricultural and fishing industries which are the cornerstones of Marbordan economic development. The stylized crossing of the two tools represents the "unbreakable alliance between farmers and fishermen."
Electoral history
The WPM holds a near-total monopoly on power within the country through a coalition with the Socialist Alliance, a popular front of minor political parties that are under the de facto control of the WPM.
