Ridgelantic (Modern Ridgelantic: Ridgelantik) is a West Germanic constructed language mainly spoken in the Sovereign State of Ridgeland. Created by Forest C. F. in 2023, it was created with the purpose of creating a distinct Ridgelantic national culture, along with being purposefully designed to be mostly understood by English speakers. Ridgelantic is a creole language, being a mix between German, Dutch, and slight hints of Western Frisian. Ridgelantic is written in Latin script, with the addition of two letters unique to Ridgelantic, Þ (thet) and ʧ (chet). The letter C is also absent from the Ridgelantic script.

History

A document including the original outline of a proposed Romantic Ridgelantic language.

The idea of a Ridgelantic language was first created by Forest C. F. in November 2022 shortly after the foundation of Ridgeland, originally proposed as a Romantic language that derived mainly from Latin. However, most documents concerning Ridgeland, including the Ridgelantic Constitution and Declaration of Sovereignty, were written in American English. Thus, the idea of a Romantic Ridgelantic language was abandoned. Romantic Ridgelantic, however, would have multiple words eventually adopted by modern day Ridgelantic, including the word Ridgelant and Halle (eventually evolving into Hallo).

The early stages of a Germanic Ridgelantic were created in early February 2023, adopting words from German, Western Frisian, and Dutch. Minor Romantic influences were still present in early Ridgelantic, such as the word leʧ, meaning milk, and the prefix mikro-. From this point, early Ridgelantic gradually evolved into modern day Ridgelantic, abandoning multiple early Ridgelantic words such as od, in modern Ridgelantic replaced with vor, and the suffix -ikism being replaced with -itet. Modern Ridgelantic grammar rules were also established, and on 22 January 2024, Ridgelantic was adopted as the national language of the Sovereign State of Ridgeland[1].

Grammar

Standard grammatical rules in Ridgelantic evolved over time, which came to include present tense verbs ending in -on, past tense verbs ending in -end, adjectives ending in -ik and for root words in an adjective that end with -at or -al ending with -aatik or -aalik respectively to conform to Ridgelantic adjective structure, and -aats or -aal for plural nouns. In early Ridgelantic, Ridgelantic grammatical rules were typically much looser.
