Randulia, officially the Republic of Randulia (German: Republik Randulia, Slovak: Randulská Republika ) was a self-declared independent nation-state, commonly referred to as a micronation by external observers, with a single claim in Central Europe. For the entirety of its existence, it was governed as a unitary dominant party state where the ruling party was the Randulia Forward party headed by then incumbent Prime Minister, Mr. Samuel Carsky.
Etymology
The name Randulia is derived from the last name of prominent micronationalist Nicholas Randouler. This is to honour his legacy and prominence in the micronational world. The founders of Randulia saw great inspiration in his dedication to serve others, and his political ambition. In recognition of these virtues, Nicholas Randouler was made an honorary citizen of the Republic of Randulia.
History
The Republic of Randulia was the brainchild of a small collective of like-minded individuals who are collectively collectively identified as the Legislators by historians. The concept of Randulia was to establish a place to meet people from all the four corners of the world, and to ultimately participate in the development of a nation that transcends physical boundaries uniting all its citizens underneath one red and white banner.
The founding documents of Randulia were drafted back in late 2020 at the height of the global Coronavirus Pandemic. However, due to the Pandemic taking a toll on the lives of much of its citizens, the Randulia project remained dormant until in early January 2021, the Declaration of Independence was signed and the Republic was officially declared as functional.
Over the span of a few months, the government was organised, and sworn in under the guiding hand of the Randulia Forward Party.
Dissolution
Prompted by strong sentiments in favor of reunification, the Randulian Government organized a referendum about reunification. The outcome of the referendum showed overwhelming support in favor of complete reunification with the Slovak Republic. This led to the government from resigning, and formally dissolving the republic in the State Council on February 18, 2023. This marked the end of more than two years of existence for the young republic.
Politics and government
Randulia is a parliamentary republic based on the Westminster system. The Constitution of Randulia is the supreme law of the country, establishing the structure and responsibility of government. The president is head of state and exercises executive power on the advice of her ministers. The State Council together with the State President form the collective head of government. The State President is appointed by the State Council in an election. Cabinet is chosen by the State President and formally approved by the State Council.
The government is separated into three branches:
- Executive: The State President is commander-in-chief of the military, can veto laws before they become effective (subject to parliamentary override), and holds limited discretionary powers of oversight over the government. The State President and Cabinet are responsible for administering and enforcing laws and policies. The State President together with the State Council is in-charge of drafting and carrying out Randulia's Foreign Policy.
- Legislative: The unicameral Parliament enacts national law, approves budgets, and provides a check on government policy.
- Judiciary: The Supreme Court and State Courts, whose judges are appointed by the president, interpret laws and overturn those they find unconstitutional.
The State President is elected by parliament for a renewable one-year term. Requirements for this position are extremely stringent, such that no more than several dozen people qualify for candidacy.
Members of Parliament (MPs) are chosen to serve for a term lasting up to six months. The current Parliament has 10 members; 7 were directly elected from the 7 constituencies, 1 is a nonpartisan nominated member appointed by the president, and two are non-constituency members from opposition parties who were not elected in the last general election but appointed to the legislature to increase opposition party representation.
The judicial system is based on English common law. Trial by jury was abolished two months after the declaration of independence switching to a bench trial system.
Law and order
Historically, during the early days of the Republic, the then provisional government has restricted some freedom of speech and freedom of the press and has limited some civil and political rights. This was done to safeguard state security and to maintain public order to prevent extremist elements from gaining influence or inciting conflict.
Foreign relations
The Republic of Randulia unilaterally recognised all current members and observers of the Grand Unified Micronational and Cupertino Alliance. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs had a policy amining to establish bilateral recognition with all the members and observers of the aforementioned intermicronational organisations.
Randulian foreign policy was built on the principle mutual respect, the necessity to maintain constructive dialogue, and a firm commitment to multilateralism.
The Legislative Assembly of the Republic of Randulia formally ratified the Charter of the Grand Unified Micronational on the 19th of May 2021.
Randulia became an observer of the Grand Unified Micronational on the 12th of June 2022. It later withdrew from the organization on the 18th of February 2023.
Geography and climate
Randulia experiences a climate akin to nations situated in Central Europe. This means there are four seasons, and that the climate is subject to frequent change.
Economy
Nothing is currently known about the economy of the Republic of Randulia.
Culture and media
Randulia is a traditionally Christian nation where Christmas, Easter, and the Day Ascension are all observed as national and religious holidays. The official state religion is the Roman Catholic Church.
Martial Arts is a very popular past time in Randulia. So much so, that Judo is the national sport. Other sports like Soccer and Ice Hockey are also widely popular throughout the Republic.
