Matuco, officially the Principality of Matuco, is a self declared sovereign state operating in England, United Kingdom. It is classified as a micronation by external observers. The nation was founded on 23 March 2023.

The functioning national languages of Matuco are English and Portuguese. Both are recognised as official languages and are commonly spoken.

The principality is a semi-constitutional monarchy. The monarch wields executive power, and some legislative abilities, both of which are exercised in accordance with other institutions - typically the legislature.

History

Matuco was formally established on 23 March 2023, after Princess Olivia felt inspired to establish a micronation styled after some of the modern European principalities after discovering micronationalism.

Government and Politics

Matuco is a semi-constitutional monarchy with a prince or princess as head of state. The monarch retains executive powers but often allows the government, lead by the Chancellor of Matuco, to exercise them through royal prerogative.

Monarchy

The monarch is the executive head of state of the principality. The monarchy is hereditary and the current ruling house is House de Torrez.

The monarch acts as a symbol of the nation, appoints the chancellor and other cabinet ministers, grants royal assent to laws or vetoes them. They also serve as commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

The current monarch is Princess Olivia.

Chancellery

The chancellor serves as head of government. They lead the government and chair the cabinet. The chancellor is appointed by the monarch, typically after legislative elections. The chancellor guides the legislative process in parliament, advises the monarch, proposes legislation and nominates ministers for office. They are also typically the leader of their political party.

National Assembly

The National Assembly is the unicameral legislature of the principality sometimes known as parliament. It passes all laws that aren't decreed into law by the monarch and the government are required to maintain the support of the national assembly. The national assembly can bring a vote of no confidence against the government at any time and also submits bills to the monarch for royal assent after passing in the chamber.

Culture

Matucan culture is heavily influenced by a combination of British and Portuguese culture.

Sport

The official sport of the nation is Wado-Ryu karate, with national events being organised by the government's Office of Culture.

Other sports enjoyed in Matuco include running, football and table-tennis.

National Symbols

The primary national symbol of the principality is the national flag. It is heavily inspired by the Liechtenstein flag. It consists of a crown representing the monarchy, a green stripe representing national unity and a red stripe representing the people of the nation.

Geography

Matuco is currently located within the UK, but claims Bir Tawil as its territory. A priority of the government is securing the claim, and creating a strategic plan to make Bir Tawil a place where the nation can be successfully established.
