Constitution of Zinland |
The Parliament of Zinland, constitutionally the Parliament of the Republic, is the unicameral legislature of the Republic of Zinland. It usually meets online or in Eleydon, the capital of Zinland. Parliament sits for sessions of one year, each session being opened by the President of Zinland. The Vice President of Zinland constitutionally sits as the ex officio president of parliament.
History
Parliament was established on 14 April 2023 and was formally established and had its role defined by the constitution.
Election
Members of parliament are elected for five year terms. They are elected to represent constituencies created by the electoral commission. They are elected within their constituencies by the first past the post electoral system.
Powers
Parliament is granted powers including:
- Overruling Presidential Decrees
- Impeaching Executive Officers
- Passing Bills
- Scrutinising the Government
- Nominating Supreme Court Justices
Privileges
Members of parliament are granted parliamentary privilege. This permits MPs to have absolute freedom of speech during debates in parliament. It also prevents the conviction of an MP under Zinnish law during sittings of parliament for crimes except high treason - however, this can be overruled by the president or supreme court in exceptional circumstances.
