The New Shetland Proclamation of Independence is the announcement created by New Shetland to proclaim independence from New Zealand. The proclamation was written and approved during the third day of the Provisional Council of State, and was proclaimed later on the 21 August 2022. The document is considered to be a unilateral declaration of independence.
The author, Liam Lithgow, would later become the President of New Shetland.
History
On 18 August 2022, Liam Lithgow established the Provisional Council of State. The purpose of the council of state was to fully establish the Republic of New Shetland as an independent, sovereign nation, declaring her independence from New Zealand. The council also had the task of creating the Constitution of New Shetland, the supreme law of the Republic of New Shetland, and the forming of an interim government.
The last act of the Provisional Council of State was to create this Proclamation of Independence.

The Proclamation of Independence states as follows:
We, the people of the Republic of New Shetland, through the representation of the Provisional Council of State, assembled on the twenty-first day of August, in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-two, hereby issue the following proclamation to wit:
Whereas, the people of the Republic of New Shetland, through the representation of the Provisional Council of State, and the domain currently claimed by the Republic of New Shetland, does hereby, declare its full independence from the sovereign state of New Zealand, the Realm of New Zealand and the City of Auckland.
Whereas, the people of the Republic of New Shetland, through the representation of the Provisional Council of State, does hereby, appoint Liam Hugh Michael Lithgow, of Hillsborough, President of the Republic of New Shetland, whom shall be, and is declared to be, President of the Republic of New Shetland, for his life.
Whereas, the people of the Republic of New Shetland, through the representation of the Provisional Council of State, does hereby, adopt the Constitution of the Republic of New Shetland, agreed to by the Provision Council of State of the Republic of New Shetland, to govern the Republic of New Shetland as its supreme law.
Whereas, the people of the Republic of New Shetland, through the representation of the Provisional Council of State, does hereby, claim the territory covered by the Auckland City and Northland, extending from Waitakere in the west, Maraetai in the east, Cape Reinga in the north and Pukekohe in the south.
Whereas, the people of the Republic of New Shetland, through the representation of the Provisional Council of State, does hereby, create the New Shetland Guard, the primary military force of the Republic of New Shetland. It shall be led by the Commandant of the New Shetland Guard, who shall be selected by the President of the Republic of New Shetland.
Thus, with the Republic of New Shetland declared as a sovereign, independent nation, the Provisional Council in State is hereby dissolved in order to form the first Legislative Assembly to implement the Constitution and establish the nation fully.
Legacy
The New Shetland Proclamation of Independence is the founding document of New Shetland. It is a significant part of New Shetland's history.
