New Shetland (njuː ˈʃɛtlənd), officially known as the Republic of New Shetland (Māori: Whenua o New Shetland; Scottish Gaelic: Poblachd de Sealtainn Nuadh) is a self-proclaimed sovereign state located within New Zealand. Classified as a micronation by external observers, the nation's territories are located around the City of Auckland. Through a Provisional Council of State, New Shetland declared its independence on 21 August 2022.

The official languages of New Shetland are English, Māori, and Scottish Gaelic, the latter of which is official in only two countries; New Shetland and Scotland. Although New Shetland has three official languages, the main language spoken and written within the nation is English.

The Republic of New Shetland is a unitary parliamentary republic, with a Presidential head of state who serves for life. The head of government is the Prime Minister, who leads the Cabinet of the Republic and is elected to the Legislative Assembly, the legislature of the nation.

As a relatively young nation, New Shetland is not apart of any intermicronational organisations, however, has expressed interest in joining the Grand Unified Micronational and Micronational Assembly.

Etymology

New Shetland's name comes from the Scottish Shetland Islands, a group of islands north of the Scottish Highlands. Much of the New Zealand population emigrated from Scotland, so the Provisional Council of State saw it as fitting to name it after a Scottish area.
