The Kingdom of Roskill (Māori: Kīngitanga o Puketāpapa), commonly known as Roskill (Puketāpapa), is a self-proclaimed kingdom and sovereign state, though it is commonly referred to as a micronation by external sources. All of its territory is located within the Auckland suburb of Mt Roskill. The nation is completely surrounded by New Zealand. Hillsborough is the capital city of the nation, as well as the largest city by population and area.

The Kingdom of Roskill declared independence from New Zealand on 22 October 2022, led by Liam Lithgow, whom later became the first King of Roskill. Roskill is a unitary parliamentary semi-constitutional monarchy. The head of state is the Monarch, King Hugh Michael I of Roskill. The head of government is the Premier, which is currently vacant. The national legislature is the National Assembly, a unicameral chamber based upon the Westminster system.

The nation has two official languages - English and Māori - the latter being official only in New Zealand. Although having two official languages, the most common language spoken and written is English. As a multicultural nation, a small fraction of Roskillians speak non-official languages, such as Mandarin and Arabic.

Although a young nation, Roskill is a member of the Micronational Assembly and the League of Independent Nations. It has expressed interest in joining the Grand Unified Micronational and the Micronational Community of Australia.

Etymology

The Kingdom of Roskill is named after the Auckland suburb of Mt Roskill, the location where the nation sits. One of the city's larger suburbs, it was largely farmland until after the Second World War. It was a separate borough from 1947 until local government reorganisation in 1989 amalgamated it with Auckland City, and then later the larger 'Super-City', created following a Royal Commission on local government reform.

The Kingdom of Roskill's Māori name is Puketāpapa, which means 'flat-topped hill'. The alternative Māori name is Pukewīwī, which means 'hill covered in rushes'.
