Monarchy of Exeter
The monarchy of the Kingdom of Exeter, otherwise known as Exonian Monarchy is the constitutional form of government by which a hereditary sovereign reigns as the head of the state of the Kingdom of Exeter, the Crown Dependencies and the National Overseas Territories. The Current monarch is King Henry II, who ascended the throne upon its creation in 2003.
The monarch adn their immediate family undertake various official, ceremonial, diplomatic and representational duties. As the monarchy is constitutional, the monarch is limited to functions such as bestowing honors and appointing the prime minister, which are performed in a non-partisan manner. The monarch is also Head of the National Armed Forces. Though the ultimate executive authority over the government is still formally by and through the royal prerogative, these powers may only be usd according the laws enacted by Paliament and, in practice, within the constrains of convention and precedent.
The Exonian monarchy traces its origins from the Dukedom of Exeter, a now extinct title from the Peerage of Great Britain granted to Thomas Beaufort, 1st Duke of Exeter and grandson to Edward III.
Succession
Succession is governed by statutes such as Act of Succession to The Exonian Throne of 2006. The rules of succession may only be changed by an Act of Parliament; it is not possible for an individual to renounce to his or her right of succession. The Act of Succession to the legitimate descendants of Thomas II, father to the Henry II.
Upon the death of a sovereign, their heir immediately and automatically succeeds (hence the phrase "The king is dead, long live the king"), and the accession of the new sovereign is publicly proclaimed by His Majesty's Household. Upon their accession, a new sovereign is required by law to make and subscribe several oaths. when an individual ascends the throne, it is expected they will reign until death. There has never been an abdication of any sort.
Restrictions by gender.
Succession is governed by male-preference cognatic primogeniture, under which sons inherit before daughters, and elder children inherit begore younger ones of the same gender. In 2020, there was a change in the Exonian law which made Prince James heir to the throne of Exeter, although he does not bear the title of 'Prince of Kent', title reserved for the lawfully begotten heir, which is currently held by his uncle Prince Joseph.
