The State of Mangalistan (Mangal: Mangalistan Devleti) is an unrecognized nation claiming Benten-jima island (which is also claimed by Japan).
History
State of Mangalistan (2014-2015)
Mangalistan was created in November 2014 by Noyan Hasan, Toshiko and Asger Han. Asger Han was originally khan but Toshiko later took power. On November 21, 2014, Mangalistan joined the Meijing-led Alliance of East Asian Micronations and began diplomatic ties with its members. On the December 1, 2014, Toshiko began a war with former ally Meijing over the crown of Shurigawa. Mangalistan and local supporters of Toshiko won the war and Toshiko ruled Shurigawa but the war forced Mangalistan and Shurigawa to leave the Meijing-led Alliance of East Asian Micronations. Toshiko, a day after the war, abdicated from the Mangal throne to rule Shurigawa, returning the Mangal throne to Asger Han. Mangalistan remained stable for months after and in June 2015, Asger Han abdicated and K'ab Han replaced him.
Mangal Civil War
Since early August there had been plans to turn Mangalistan into a republic. However former khan Toshiko was against the idea and threatened to oust K'ab Han to defend the monarchy. On August 26, 2015, Toshiko re-declared himself as khan and ousted K'ab Han. Noyan Hasan and K'ab Han formed the pro-republican nationalist Mangal National People's Front to combat Toshiko and the Mangal Civil War began.
Etymology
Mangal means "grill" in Mangal and "-stan" is a Persian suffix meaning "Land of".
Geography
Benten-jima is 0.005 square kilometres (0.0019 sq mi) in area, its perimeter is roughly 0.5 kilometres (0.31 mi), and its highest point is 20 metres (66 ft) above sea level. It is named after Benzaiten, once enshrined on the island. The wildlife includes many seabirds, steller sea lions, kombu kelp, and sea urchins.
