Free Matachewan, also known by Warszawianka was the national anthem of the Kingdom of Matachewan. It's melody was composed by Polish composed Karol Kurpiński in 1831 and it is avidly used as a classical march for the Polish armed forces and police force. In 2020 it was fitted with an English text written by Matachewanian king Brandon and Patrick Kenny to become the de-facto national anthem of Matachewan. It's status as national anthem was never legislated, but enjoyed legality in the kings informal approval.
History
The earliest recorded version of the songs acknowledgement as a national anthem was on 22 June 2020 when the king published its new text, though it is assumed that the instrumental alone had this acknowledgement for long by then. The song does not have a refrain and it is not certain how much, nor which parts of the instrumental that the lyrics account for. Two additional verses of the song were released on 18 November 2020 however this is uncertain. The new verses were written by the king alone, hence a noticeable change in phrasing. They were treated largely as the anthem's "short version" and would be the most common verses thereafter. The opening phrase of the latter verses "O' Matachewan" is alleged to be an intentional nod towards "O' Canada" in the national anthem of Canada of the same name.
Text
O' Matachewan you set us free,
in return we’ll fight for you till death
For you given’ us liberty,
and freedom we must defend.
If we must go to fight then,
let the Eagle take flight.
For we are her people
and Matachewan is our right
O' Matachewan you set us free,
in return we’ll fight for you till death
For you given’ us liberty,
and freedom we must defend.
And our freedom we must defend!
