History

The office was founded on 21 April 2023. It was created as an office similar to that of the deputy prime minister.

Responsibilities

The office does not have any specified duties. The duties of the role are normally dependant on what the prime minister needs the officeholder to do. However, it has been noted that having someone appointed to this office can free up another minister to focus on their duties.

Appointment

The first secretary of state is appointed by the monarch and serves at the monarch's pleasure. However, the monarch typically appoints the individual nominated by the Prime Minister.
