The February 2023 Georgienstinian congressional election was held on 14–15 February 2023.
It resulted in a Georgienstine First victory, with the party keeping its majority and all parties keeping the same number of seats but seeing minor losses.
Background
The January 2023 Georgienstinian congressional election resulted in Georgienstine First remaining as the majority party and seeing minor gains in seats, but minor losses in the popular vote. The Vision Georgienstine alliance was second and saw minor gains in seats, but major losses in the popular vote. Centre Georgienstine won one seat, which was a surprise, as the media had overestimated their support.
Shortly thereafter, congressperson-elect Esty Carpentieri refused to recite the oath of office and resigned, believing that the Oath Act barred him from taking office. However, after further review, Minority Leader Nicolas Caiazzo realized that the Oath Act had never been passed by the National Congress and Carpentieri was sworn in and his resignation was annulled. The Oath Act has since been presented by Majority Leader Alexandre Olivier, and narrowly passed on 29 January with 6 votes for, 5 votes against, 1 abstention, and 5 who did not vote.
On 6 January 2023, Thomas Jacobs won the speaker election receiving 8 votes, to Esty Carpentieri's 6, Andrew Perdomo's 1, with 1 not voting. In accordance with Georgienstinian law, this situation constituted a tie as Jacobs had received 50% of the votes and Vice President Ali Farrokhzad broke the tie in favour of Jacobs.
The same day, May Junkin was elected Minority Leader to replace Nicolas Caiazzo following his resignation as Minority Leader, with Caiazzo retaking the position of Minority Whip, which he had held in the past.
Electoral system and organization
The National Congress is composed of 16 seats elected by proportional representation in a single nationwide constituency, with a legal threshold of 1 full seat (6.25%), and residuals assigned by the D’Hondt method.
