There are two main types of elections in the Empire of Ela'r'oech - local elections and federal elections. The former are used to elect Representative Members of Parliament (RMPs or MPs) for each province and territory. Though they can be held individually as snap elections, such as if a new province or territory is incorporated into the Empire mid-way through the term, they are usually held on separate days. They are open to all residents of the province or territory in question. Local elections use instant-runoff voting, commonly known as the alternative vote (AV).
Federal elections are used to elect those who will enter the Office of the President and the Office of the Chancellor. For federal elections, the first-past-the-post system is used. Federal elections - usually only for the Office of President - are held every 6 months, with incumbent Presidents able to run again each time unless they have used up their three-term limit. The Office of Chancellor does not have elections often, as the office is one which has no term limit or expiration date.
Procedures
Candidates
All candidates standing for any election must be over the age of 12. In order to become a candidate, a nomination form must first be completed, stating full name, micronational address, party affiliation and signature, and returned to the current Head of Election Committee; they become a candidate as soon as the Committee declares their nomination valid. The Election Committee is required to make nomination forms available as soon as possible after an election is called. Candidates may withdraw at any time before the elections.
All candidates standing in local elections must be over the age of 12, with candidates standing in federal elections being required to be over the age of 15.
You cannot run for public office in Ela'r'oech if you are a convict, felon, terrorist, or spy in the nation.
Electors
There is no need to register to vote in Ela'r'oech; as long as a prospective elector is a registered full citizen, they will be allowed to vote. There is no age requirement.
Parties
Candidates in any election may choose to run under a party or as an independent. However, in the Empire there are two 'federal wings' which one can run under. A candidate for a local election has the option of running under a federal wing. All federal election candidates are required to run under a federal wing.
Federal wings include the Traditional Wing and the Forward Wing. The Traditional Wing is used to signify that you are either an incumbent or stand by the current administration's ideals. The Forward Wing is used to signify that you do not stand by the current administration's ideals.
