The Ipsissium of Verdisolia, more commonly known as Verdisolia (Latin: Ipsissium Verdisolium), is a micronation located in the Ohio Valley region of the United States, in North America. The nation is divided into three administrative regions, each responsible for local governance within their territories. Initially founded as a parliamentary republic, the state underwent a series of reforms in June 2024, consolidating all power into the executive branch and forming an absolute monarchy.

Verdisolia is governed by an Ipsissimus , the supreme authority within the micronation. Upon assuming this position, the Ipsissimus adopts a formal public name that signifies their role as the embodiment of Verdisolia's sovereignty and leadership. In addition to the public name, the Ipsissimus also acquires a private, sacred name known exclusively to themselves.

Verdisolia serves as a proponent of eco-Marxist principles, advocating for a model of governance that is sustainable and equitable. Diplomatically, Verdisolia adopts a festina lente approach to diplomacy, requiring a requisite level of professionalism and decorum before establishing diplomatic ties with other micronations.

Etymology

The name Verdisolia is a union of two Latin words-- viridis, meaning green, and sol, the Latin name for the sun. The term viridis was selected for its prevalence in environmental politics, with the color green seeing frequent use as a symbol in environmentally focused political parties such as the Green Party of the United States and die Grünen ("the Greens") in Germany. Sol was selected for its historical use as a symbol of "generation and growth and nurture."

The term Ipsissium finds its origins in the Latin word ipse, meaning self, which is itself compounded from Proto-Indo-European *éy, roughly meaning the and *swé, roughly meaning my own or as a pronoun meaning self . The term Ipsissium is the superlative form of ispe, with the suffix -ium typically being used to name a group of something, or to indicate the setting where a particular event occurs.

The title Ipsissimus, saw a resurgence in use in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a secret society and magical order founded by three members of the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia, utilized the term Ipsissimus as the term for their eleventh and highest degree. The term also saw use in a similar capacity by the A∴A∴, a syncretic magical order founded by Aleister Crowley in 1907.

History

Indigenous History

Archaeological evidence from the regions surrounding Verdisolia indicates that the land of Verdisolia was likely occupied by Native Americans as early as the 9,500 to 8,000 B.C.E, with evidence that early societies in the region were egalitarian in structure, with no formal leaders or social classes.Large ancient landfills, known as middens have been located in the lakes and rivers near Verdisolia indicating a diet rich in mussels, fish, clams, deer, and elk.

The indigenous people in the region surrounding Verdisolia transitioned from a hunter-gatherer structure to an agricultural society around 1,800 B.C.E, with the remains of the Adena and Hopewell being found in the region. The introduction of corn to the region influenced a transition from the growing of indigenous plants to one founded in the cultivation of maize, though white-tailed deer and shellfish remained an integral part of their diet.

Early Political Development

The Republic of Verdisolia was established on 4 April 2024 by a group of eco-Marxist and neo-Luddite activists in response to growing concerns about climate change, social inequality, and the unsustainable nature of global capitalism. Initially a small group of friends with an interest in local activism, the founders of Verdisolia, led by Ralph Grainger, sought to create a micronation based on eco-Marxist principles.

Verdisolia's early political landscape evolved significantly, shaped by the interaction between its primary political factions, the Neo-Luddite Resistance Party and the United Eco-Marxist Party. These factions contributed differing ideologies to the nation's democratic framework, fostering political discourse.

The Neo-Luddite Resistance Party advocated for a return to simpler, less technologically dependent lifestyles. It emphasized environmental conservation through policies that limit industry and technological advancement. The NLRP upheld traditional values and lifestyles less influenced by modern technology and globalization. In diplomatic affairs, the party advocated for policies of isolationism, holding that these resources should instead be invested in conservation efforts.

The United Eco-Marxist Party combined Marxist thought with environmental concerns. It promoted social and economic justice through wealth redistribution, workers' rights, and the reduction of income inequality alongside sustainable development goals. The party prioritized environmental preservation, advocating for the adoption of renewable energy sources, reduction in carbon emissions, and international cooperation on environmental issues. It supported democratic socialism, emphasizing democratic control over economic sectors and public services, with community ownership and participatory decision-making processes. Diplomatically, the United Eco-Marxist Party advocated for internationalist policies, arguing that international cooperation has the potential to extend the ideals of the nation beyond its borders.

Period of Legislative Inactivity

During its history, Verdisolia experienced a notable period of political stagnation characterized by a lack of scheduled elections and diminished legislative activity. This phase, spanning from early to mid-2024, marked a departure from the nation's established democratic processes and principles.

The stagnation was primarily attributed to internal challenges within the People's Assembly, the legislative body responsible for enacting laws and representing the interests of Verdisolia's citizens. Issues such as procedural disputes, legislative inaction, and a marked absence in constitutionally mandated elections contributed to a prolonged hiatus in democratic activities.. Members of the People's Assembly, led by Nate Sterling, discussed the foundation of an online forum or wiki by which the assembly could continue to operate asynchronously, though this proposal never received a formal vote as the Assembly was unable to establish a quorum.

As a result, governance in Verdisolia faced uncertainties and a perceived erosion of democratic norms during this period. The absence of regular elections led to a hiatus in the formation of new legislative measures and policy initiatives, impacting the nation's ability to address emerging social and environmental challenges.

Transition to Absolute Monarchy

In response to these challenges and in an effort to restore effective governance, Verdisolia underwent significant political reforms in June 2024. These reforms culminated in the transition from a parliamentary system to an absolute monarchy, consolidating executive authority under the Ipsissimus. During this period, each ministry was evaluated on its utility and effectiveness, with many ministries being dissolved, merged with others, or retained under the new title of templum. This period also saw a series of new policies and initiatives, such as the Animal Foster Care Program and a set of standards establishing criteria for diplomatic recognition.

Politics and government

Verdisolia was founded as a parliamentary republic consisting of three branches. The executive branch was led by a President, elected by popular vote for a one-year term. The President additionally served as the chair for the Executive Council--an advisory body consisting of the various ministry leaders in the republic. The legislative branch, consisting of a unicameral body known as the People's Assembly, was composed of elected representatives of each commune. Elected to a six-month term, the body dissolved in mid-2024 after failing to hold constitutionally-required elections. The judicial branch, responsible for interpreting laws passed by the Assembly, additionally held the responsibility of presiding over civil and criminal cases.

Verdisolia operates under the governance of an absolute monarchy with Ipsissimus Prosper as the reigning monarch. The monarchy is officially established as hereditary, following the principle of equal primogeniture, where the eldest child inherits the throne regardless of gender. The monarch additionally holds the ability to alter the line of succession, although there is no account of this occurring. The Ipsissimus holds cardinal executive, legislative, and judicial power within the nation, with the authority to designate representatives to exercise that power within certain jurisdictions or templi.

The principal advisory body of Verdisolia is the Magisterium. Comprising heads of various Templi, known as Magisters, the Magisterium plays a crucial role in providing counsel on administrative affairs. Appointed by Ipsissimus Prosper I, these Magisters are also entrusted with executive and legislative powers within their designated areas of expertise, albeit subordinate to the Ipsissimus' override power.

From its founding, Verdisolia has self-identified as an eco-Marxist state, holding the position that capitalism and industrialization are the primary cause of social marginalization and the Holocene extinction. Verdisolia employs pro-LGBTQ+ policies, requiring the use of any person's preferred gender pronouns. Additionally, Verdisolia legally recognizes both same-sex and opposite-sex marriages.

Foreign relations

Verdisolia's foreign relations are administered through the Templum of Foreign Affairs. While serving as the de facto executive body for foreign affairs during the nation's transition to monarchy, it received de jure authority on 28 June 2024. Led by the Magister of Foreign Affairs, the templum has the authority to sign and draft treaties, as well as provide informal diplomatic recognition to foreign powers.

Verdisolia utilizes a standards-based approach to diplomatic recognition, aligned in part with the criteria for statehood detailed in the Montevideo Convention. These standards also require states to demonstrate a requisite professional decorum. Additionally, these standards restrict the recognition of states that make assertions of territorial sovereignty exceeding a nation's practical ability to govern. The Templum of Foreign Affairs uses a process of evaluation based on these standards to determine whether a state qualifies for recognition.
