The Deputy Prime Minister of Tanaau is the deputy head of government of the Kingdom of Tanaau and second highest minister of the crown, as well as a member of the Cabinet. The office is not always in use, but is often used to denote the seniority of a minister and may be given to a minister alongside another ministerial office.
The office is currently vacant.
Role
The role of deputy prime minister isn't formally defined. However, the DPM is usually expected to fill in for the Prime Minister of Tanaau in the event of their absence, help lead the Cabinet, advise the prime minister, and conduct any duties devolved to them by the prime minister.
Despite filing in for the prime minister in their absence, the deputy prime minister has no automatic right to succession to become prime minister. Usually, in the event of the prime ministry becoming vacant the monarch appoints a replacement.
The office is commonly used to denote seniority.
Sometimes a First Secretary of State is appointed instead of a deputy prime minister.
Appointment
The deputy prime minister is appointed and serves at the discretion of the monarch - who has free choice as to who takes office. However, the monarch usually appoints the person nominated for the office by the prime minister.
The DPM usually is also a member of the House of Commons.
History
The role of deputy prime minister, like that of prime minister, is not officially established in the Constitution of Tanaau. However, it traces its roots back to Chapter VII as a minister of the crown. The office was established on 17 November 2023.
