The Deputy Prime Minister of Fatrea (abbreviated to DPM) is the deputy head of government of the Kingdom of Fatrea. The DPM is the second highest ranking minister of the crown, ranking immediately below the prime minister. The office is not always in use, with some prime ministers having an informal deputy instead of a deputy prime minister.

The office is currently vacant.

History

The deputy prime ministry was established on 15 February 2024. Like the prime ministry, the office is not explicitly named in the constitution while tracing some roots to Chapter V of the constitution.

Succession

There is no automatic right to succession to the prime ministry. However, should the prime ministry fall vacant part way through a government's term the deputy prime minister is usually given the role of interim prime minister. During their term as interim prime minister they are given the responsibility of advising the monarch on the appointment of a new prime minister. It is generally expected they will advise the monarch to call new parliamentary elections and choose a new prime minister from the House of Commons, or to nominate an incumbent member of the government to be appointed prime minister. However, sometimes the incumbent deputy prime minister is the first to be offered the office of prime minister if no new elections are to be called.

Appointment

Like all other ministers, the deputy prime minister is appointed by the monarch. However, the DPM is appointed on the advice and nomination of the prime minister. As such a senior government position, the appointment of a DPM is usually given priority when a new government forms - should the prime minister want a deputy.

Duties

While there is no constitutionally defined role for the deputy prime minister, as deputy head of government the duties of the office typically includes:

  • Standing in for the Prime Minister During Absences
  • Chairing the Cabinet on the Prime Minister's Behalf
  • Advising the Prime Minister
  • Filing In the Monarch on Government Activity

Any additional duties may be devolved on the officeholder by the prime minister as needed.
